Our chemists enjoy an enviable position right at the heart of our global operation. It’s thanks to them that we, as a business, meet our performance, safety, environmental and quality targets. Chemistry at BP is the ideal marriage of the theoretical and the practical. It is, in short, an exciting and business-focused discipline with an emphasis on constant innovation.
It stands to reason that you’ll need an excellent academic record to join us here: at the very least, we’re looking for a degree in chemistry (3.0/4.0 overall GPA), and a PhD or other postgraduate qualification will be to your advantage. But beyond that, your success will depend on your personality, your willingness to learn and your desire to deliver.
Going there, and beyond
You can choose to develop your career along various routes supporting lubricant and fuel product development or research. No matter where you join you’ll be applying science, developing innovative technologies and working closely with colleagues in our engineering and commercial operations. Join the lubricant and fuel product development team and you’ll bring your theoretical knowledge to bear upon our many market-leading products. Pursue a career in Research and Development, and you could be involved in the discovery of new, commercially-focused ideas, producing clean fuels or developing the next generation of chemical processes. Whichever area you become part of, you’ll enjoy exposure to a wide range of exciting and expansive career routes.
Preparing you for the future
The industry we work in is driven by scientific innovation. What works today may be useless tomorrow. We can never afford to rest on our laurels. So it’ll come as no surprise that we’re focused on your learning and development. The length of your graduate program will depend on which part of the business you join. During this time, you won’t just develop your technical knowledge; thanks to a combination of job rotations, personal mentoring, expert advice and regular appraisals, you’ll develop the personal skills you’ll need to get the most out of the many career opportunities we can offer you. And once you’ve completed your time on the program you’ll be in an ideal position to make an informed decision about your next career step with us.
