California
In business
BP’s presence in California dates back to the late 19th century. Today, more than 6,000 employees are involved in a variety of operations ranging from refining, making and distilling lubricants, to gasoline retail operations and solar energy. Our annual payroll in California alone tops $200 million.
Our intern and graduate intake is focused on BP Carson Refinery, the largest in California. The refinery opened in 1938 as a pioneer in the production of 100-octane aviation fuel and played a crucial role in meeting military needs in World War II.
Today, the future of this much modernized and hugely expanded refinery is bright. It leads the nation in the production of low-emission gasoline, setting the standard for all other similar operations. Its 1,100 employees process 275,000 barrels of oil per day into gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and petroleum coke. It supplies an amazing 25 percent of the Los Angeles gasoline market. And it provides a first class career development platform for Chemical & Process Engineers, enabling BP to scale up, design, improve and operate the plant and technology safely and efficiently.
In the community
BP’s annual California payroll tops $200 million, and we also support many thousands of contractors, vendors and suppliers throughout the state.
As the market leader for solar energy in California, BP has introduced the BP Solar Neighbors™ Program, a California community initiative to promote the benefits of solar energy and help low income families.
