Career timeline
How has your career developed since you’ve been at BP?“I’m different from a lot of professionals in my field. I left school at 16 after GCSEs and began my career as a professional footballer. I took my ACCA qualifications at the same time. Later, I joined BP with a background in audit and now I work to improve control processes and resolve control issues. I lead a team so BP has given me leadership experience and an understanding of issues across many geographies and businesses. My roles have also come with exposure to external partners as well as a constantly changing series of new processes and systems.”
How has BP supported your career?
“I’m fortunate to be part of CAPs (BP’s Career Acceleration Programme) with access to development opportunities and senior people. CAPs is strong on networking. The leadership team will sit down on a monthly basis to discuss training, development and networking opportunities. Mentoring is key. There’s always a senior leader who can routinely give you direct advice. You can build the kind of mentoring relationship you want – one that’s tailored to your needs.”

What are the main reasons you have stayed at BP for so long?
“There’s an amazing amount of variety and choice at BP. In Finance, there are different job families within different business segments and a huge range of jobs. You can chose from roles in Commercial Operations, Performance Management, Financial Control, or even Credit Evaluation. If you like a trading environment there’s also positions there. BP has breadth that other organisations can’t offer.”

What do you see as your next role or career opportunity at BP?
“I’d like to move from Control to a role in Planning & Performance Management where I’d have more business exposure. That could be in one of several UK locations and businesses. There are opportunities for development and for continuing progression.”
