Challenges

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced since joining BP?
“Every role I’ve had at BP has pushed me to grow. Moving from Sales & Marketing to Internal Audit has been my biggest challenge so far. Volatility in the energy market has changed what we can do and how we think about risk. I keep asking myself how we can maintain our strengths and make the right changes.”

How does your role contribute to tackling the challenge of meeting global demand for energy?
“In my job, I have to understand and foresee how risks to the business will evolve – both outside and inside the organisation. Supplying energy is definitely about pushing the frontiers. It’s my job to make sure BP manages risks in order to deliver improvements.”

BP’s role

How does BP’s culture and values contribute to your life?
“Safe operations is something that I’ve translated into my personal life. We can all stop and think before we act. A colleague of mine recently renovated his house and the first thing he did was move the staircase because it would make the whole house safer for his family. That’s a good example of how the BP values really work.”

In what way does BP support your career aspirations?
“At BP, there’s always room for improvement and lots of programmes to help you develop and really make those improvements. BP isn’t hierarchical, so we’re encouraged to build networks and connections. I’m here in Internal Audit because BP saw my potential and wanted me to expand my horizons to do my job better.”

Your role

What does a typical day look like?
“My work is project based, so a typical day depends on where I am in the cycle of a project. Some days, I work in the Sunbury office. On other days, I may be taking my expertise in audit to any of BP’s locations around the world. Being part of a team is definitely important.”

What does it take to be successful at BP?
“In practical terms, you need to be a strong networker. By that I mean you should be able to make yourself and your abilities visible. The people around you need to know you and how your skills and commitment can have an impact on BP.”
