Cherry Point, WA, USAThe Cherry Point refinery has a capacity of 234 thousand barrels per day and is 100% owned by BP. It is located in Blaine, Washington. BP Cherry Point refinery predominantly processes crude oil sourced from Alaska, Canada and other parts of the world. The refinery supplies a significant share of the gasoline demand for Washington and Oregon, and the majority of jet fuel consumed at Seattle and Vancouver airports. The refinery is also the largest supplier of calcined coke to the world's aluminium industry.
Carson, CA, USAThe Carson refinery has a capacity of 266 thousand barrels per day and is 100% owned by BP. The refinery is located in Carson, Calif., and is a world leader in the production of low emission gasoline, operating in one of the most environmentally regulated regions of the world. The refinery processes oil into gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and petroleum coke to supply about 25% of the Los Angeles gasoline market. The refinery also has a cogeneration facility (51% owned by BP) which provides power to it. The 392MW cogeneration facility utilises gas turbines to produce steam and generate power.
As part of a strategic plan to restructure BP’s US refining portfolio, the company on 1st February 2011, announced it would seek the sale of the southern part of the West Coast Fuels Value Chain, including the Carson Refinery, subject to all necessary legal and regulatory approvals. The sale of the Carson refinery is expected to close by mid-2013.
Whiting, IN, USABP Whiting Refinery is located on the southwestern shore of Lake Michigan and the Indiana Harbor Ship Canal in the communities of Whiting, East Chicago and Hammond, Indiana. It started operations in 1889 and is currently the 6th largest refinery in the USA. The refinery has a capacity of 413 thousand barrels per day, processes up to 413 thousand barrels of crude oil each day, and up to 15 million gallons of refined products. This was one of the first refineries to refine low sulphur gasoline and ultra low sulphur diesel. The refinery produces about 8% of all asphalt in the U.S. It receives raw crude oil via pipeline from Canada, Gulf of Mexico and Mid Continent. It ships refined products through pipelines across the Midwest. As part of the Whiting Refinery Modernization Project, it is removing older, less efficient equipment, and installing emission controls on upgraded and other units, which will help it reduce regulated emissions further by 2013.
Toledo, OH, USABP Toledo Refinery has a processing capacity of 160 thousand barrels per day and is located in Ohio. Significant investments in heavy sour crude processing and conversion capacity, along with its cash cost and availability performance have established this refinery as an efficient and reliable supplier of clean fuels in the Ohio/Michigan region. In 2008 BP completed a deal with Husky Energy Inc. to create an integrated North American oil sands business by means of two separate joint ventures, one of which entailed Husky taking a 50% interest in BP’s Toledo refinery. Within this JV, the Toledo refinery is intended to be expanded to process approximately 170 thousand barrels per day of heavy oil and bitumen by 2021.
Cooper River, SC, USABP Cooper River manufactures Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) which is the key raw material in the production of plastic bottles and polyester material. It is located on the eastern coast of the United States. The site imports its Paraxylene feedstocks to supply the two PTA units on site.
Texas City, TX, USABP Texas City Chemicals, located southeast of Houston, Texas, manufactures Paraxylene (PX) and Metaxylene (MX). PX is used as a feedstock for Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) and MX is used in a variety of applications such as fiberglass, drink bottles and outboard motors. There are four production units on the site (three PX and one MX). The chemicals site is integrated with BP's Texas City refinery and receives most of its Mixed Xylene feedstock via a pipeline from the refinery. Close to the Texas City Chemicals site, Sterling Chemicals has a single Acetic Acid unit and BP markets 100% of the Acetic Acid produced.
As part of a strategic plan to restructure BP’s US refining portfolio, BP completed the sale of the Texas City Refinery on Feb. 1, 2013.
Decatur, AL, USABP Decatur manufactures Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA), its feedstock Paraxylene (PX) and a speciality chemical Naphthalene Dicarboxylate (NDC). PTA is the key raw material in the manufacture of plastic bottles and polyester material and NDC is a high performance material used in new generation polyesters and resins. There are six production units on site (three PTA, two PX and one NDC). The PX units have partial integration through a pipeline with BP's Whiting, Indiana refinery, which provides the Mixed Xylenes feedstock. The remainder is shipped in via barges.
Hull, UKOur Hull site at Saltend, on the east coast of England, manufactures Acetic Acid and Acetic Anhydride. Our acetyls products are key raw materials in washing bleaches and pharmaceuticals, as well as in Purified Terephthalic Acid for textiles, bottles, packaging and film products. Hull is home to one of BP's main global research and technology centres.
BPRR, The NetherlandsThe BP Rotterdam refinery is 100% owned by BP, has a capacity of 377 thousand barrels per day and has two 24MW cogeneration units. It is located on the port of Rotterdam, one of the busiest trading ports in the world.
The refinery has two sites; a 390 acre oil processing and offloading facility in Europoort and a 90 acre offloading facility in Pernis. At the Europoort site, there are 100 storage tanks with a total capacity of 4.3million m3. At this site, produced components are mixed into end products. These are transported by road, water, rail and pipeline where they find their way to service stations, depots and into industry and shipping. At Pernis, a modern tanker dock loads an average of 125 tanker trucks per day with gasoline.
Rotterdam is ISO14001 certified and makes products to stringent environmental standards.
Geel, BelgiumThe Geel site in Belgium is located close to Antwerp and manufactures Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA), which is the key raw material in the production of plastic bottles and polyester material. This facility also makes Paraxylene, which is the main feedstock for PTA. An expansion of the plant was commissioned in 2009 and has improved overall operating costs and increased total capacity to about 2 million tonnes per year.
Castellón, SpainThe BP Castellón refinery is 100% owned by BP and has a capacity of 110 thousand barrel per day. It is located south of Valencia, Spain.
BP Castellón is the only refinery in its region (Castellón, Valencia and Balearic Isles). With its high degree of flexibility, the refinery is able to run sour (>0.7% sulphur content), heavy and high acidic crudes. The refinery makes many products to capture market opportunities, complying with stringent environmental requirements.
After four years of planning and construction, the refinery’s new 20 thousand barrel-a-day coker came on-stream in February 2009. The coker is able to upgrade the refinery’s low value residual fuel oil into higher value transport fuels. The new coker unit is the largest single investment in Castellón refinery since it was commissioned over 40 years ago.
Gelsenkirchen, GermanyThrough the Ruhr Oel GmbH Joint Venture with PdVSA, BP has a 50% interest in a highly integrated refinery and petrochemicals complex at Gelsenkirchen.
The Gelsenkirchen site is operated by BP and the refinery occupies two sites, at Scholven and Horst, linked by a pipeline system. The refinery has a capacity of 265 thousand barrels per day. It is one of the largest refineries in Germany.
The facility has 35 major process plants and is flexible in the processing of crudes from Russia, North Sea, Africa, Veneela and other points of origin. It has a high upgrading complexity with FCC (fluid catalytic cracker), HCU (hydraulic control unit), Coker and petrochemicals integration, and is a leading producer of clean fuels for the German market, producing a diesel blended with rapeseed oil methyl ester. The site is strongly integrated in the Rhine Fuels Value Chain with a significant market share in the important Rhine Ruhr area.
The petrochemicals plant consists of two steam crackers that are co-located and integrated with the refinery. The plant produces a variety of Olefins and Derivatives, but the main products are ethylene and propylene which are used to make resins, fibres, plastics and numerous other chemical products.
Bayernoil, GermanyThe Bayernoil refinery has a capacity of 218 thousand barrels per day in which BP owns a 22.5% share. The refinery is located in Bavaria, Germany and is operated across two locations. The refinery produces a diverse range of products such as gasoline, diesel, fuel oil and bitumen. The refinery is operated by Bayernoil.
In 2008 the refinery completed a multi-year reconfiguration project which will position the Bayernoil refinery to be more efficient and competitive. The project resulted in the closure of one of three operating locations and the construction of new diesel production facilities, increasing yield of this deficit product.
Lingen, GermanyThe BP Lingen refinery is 100% owned by BP and has a capacity of 93 thousand barrels per day. It is located in North West Germany. BP Lingen is one of the most complex refineries in the world and is considered one of Europe's leading conversion refineries, owing to the refinery's thermal and catalytic cracking units (cokers and hydrocrackers). In keeping with efforts to protect the environment, all of the gasoline and diesel fuel products are essentially free of sulphur (max. 10 ppm sulphur). The refinery has extensive storage and shipping facilities for the transport of oil to and from the refinery via rail, water, road and pipeline. The Lingen refinery produces a biofuel of diesel blended with rapeseed oil methyl ester. It also produces 50 MW of electricity from two natural gas powered gas turbines, for use on site and for sale of the excess energy.
Mulheim, GermanyDHC Solvent Chemie GmBh is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Ruhr Oel GmbH joint venture in which BP owns a 50% share. The company produces hydrocarbon solvents and speciality mineral oil products by the distillation of refinery streams produced at the ROG Gelsenkirchen refinery.
The Karlsruhe refinery has a capacity of 322 thousand barrels per day in which BP owns a 12% share. The refinery is operated by our partner Mineraloelraffinerie Oberrhrin GmbH and is located in Karlsruhe, Germany. The refinery is Germany's second largest refinery and one of the most modern and productive refineries in Europe and is a key fuel supply source for Southwest Germany.
The PCK Schwedt refinery has a capacity of 239 thousand barrels per day in which BP owns a 18.75% share. The refinery is located north east of Berlin in Germany and is operated by PCK.
The PCK Schwedt refinery processes approximately 10% of Germany's crude oil processing capacity. PCK mainly processes crude oil supplied through the approximately 5,000km long crude-oil pipeline from Russia. After a large-scale investment programme, PCK exclusively produces ultra-low sulphur fuels.
Sapref, South AfricaThe Sapref refinery has a capacity of 180 thousand barrels per day in which BP owns a 50% share. The refinery is located in Durban, South Africa and is a 50:50 joint venture with Shell.
Chongqing, ChinaBP has a 51% interest in the YARACO joint venture with Sinopec Sichuan Vinylon Works (44%) and Chongqing Energy Investment Group (5%). This was BP's first Acetic Acid investment in mainland China. The site is integrated with an Esters plant. BP and Sinopec continue to progress the project to add a new Acetic Acid plant at the site. The expected plant start-up date is under review due to market conditions. When complete, total production at the YARACO site is expected to be in excess of one million tonnes per year, making this one of the largest Acetic Acid production locations in the world.
Zhuhai, ChinaThe Zhuhai PTA plant is located in China and has a capacity of 1,564 thousand tonnes per year. BP holds an 85% interest in the BP Zhuhai Chemical Company Limited which owns the site. Zhuhai 1 started up in January 2003. Zhuhai 2 was successfully commissioned in 1Q08 and is the world's largest single-train unit and one of the lowest cost PTA manufacturing units in the world. In 2010 a debottleneck project was started to add a further 200 thousand tonnes per year of PTA capacity, tuled for completion in the first quarter of 2012.
Nanjing, ChinaBP has a 50% interest in BP YPC Acetyls Company (Nanjing) Limited (BYACO), a joint venture with Yangzi Petrochemical Company Limited (a subsidiary of Sinopec). Commercial production at the 548 thousand tonnes per year Acetic Acid plant in Jiangsu province, China commenced in the fourth quarter of 2010.
Caojing, ChinaOur SECCO joint venture between BP (50%), Sinopec (30%) and its subsidiary, Shanghai Petroleum Company (20%) is the largest Olefins cracker in China. SECCO is BP’s single largest investment in China and the Naphtha cracker produces Ethylene and Propylene plus derivatives Acrylonitrile, Polyethylene, Polypropylene, Styrene, Polystyrene, Butadiene and other products. These products are used to make resins, fibres, plastics, synthetic rubber and numerous other chemical products. SECCO completed its first major turnaround in the third quarter of 2009 and at the same time expanded production capacity. This created China’s largest single train ethylene cracker capable of producing 1.3 million tonnes of Ethylene per year, an increase of 25%.
Mai Liao, TaiwanIn Mai Liao Taiwan, BP has a 50% interest in an Acetic Acid joint venture (FBPC) with Formosa BP Chemicals Corporation. The joint venture has one unit which started up in 2005. It is integrated with Formosa's Mai Liao site and has a pipeline linking it with downstream customers.
Kaohsiung, TaiwanIn Kaohsiung, Taiwan, BP has a 61.43% interest in the Purified Terephthalic Acid joint venture (CAPCO) with CPC Corporation. The site has five integrated production units.
Taichung, TaiwanIn Taichung, Taiwan, BP has a 61.43% interest in a Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) joint venture (CAPCO) with CPC Corporation. The site has a single PTA unit.
Merak, IndonesiaIn Merak, Indonesia, BP has a 50% interest in a Purified Terephthalic Acid joint venture with Mitsui called PT AMI. This site has one unit which started up in 1997. BP's share of capacity is 253 thousand tonnes per year.
Kertih, MalaysiaBP has a 70% interest in an Acetic Acid joint venture (BPPA) with Petronas at Kerith, Malaysia. This site is operated by BP and carbon monoxide feedstock is provided by our partner, Petronas. BP's share of capacity is 391 thousand tonnes per year.
Ulsan, South KoreaIn UIsan, South Korea, BP has a 51% interest in an Acetic Acid joint venture (SSBP) with Samsung and a 34% interest in a Vinyl Acetate Monomer (VAM) joint venture (ASACCO) with Samsung and Dow. There is one Acetic Acid production unit and one VAM unit. The SSBP site is linked by pipeline to downstream facilities and has two carbon monoxide feedstock units.
Kwinana, AustraliaThe BP Kwinana refinery has a capacity of 146 thousand barrels per day and is located in Perth Australia. BP Kwinana is uniquely situated as the sole refinery on the west coast of Australia.
The refinery supplies a full range of clean fuel products (gasoline, jet and diesel) and avgas into Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand, as well as premium high-octane gasoline products within Australia. Kwinana developed and produces Opal fuel, a low-aromatic unleaded petrol which has been a key success factor in reducing petrol sniffing in remote communities.
Bulwer, AustraliaBP Bulwer refinery has a capacity of 102 thousand barrels per day and is a premier supplier of clean fuels to the rapidly growing Queensland market and has a high clean fuels capability (10ppm diesel). It was the first refinery in Australia to produce renewable diesel from Tallow.
The refinery supplies diesel into the Queensland mining and transport sectors to meet marketing demands in the fastest growing region in Australia. The refinery produces a full range of fuel products and bitumen, which are weighted towards diesel and jet.
