Indigenous Business Development program

Programs
Research undertaken by Australian Bureau of Statistics, found the proportion of Indigenous Australians working in their own business was one-quarter that of non-Indigenous Australian business. This disparity led BP Australia to support regional and community-based projects that contribute towards sustainable development, without creating dependency. In partnership with the mining industry the Indigenous Business Development Program (IBDP) was launched successfully in 2009.

In 2011 BP is proud to host a further 6 participants. The successful candidates spend two weeks with BP Australia mentors, developing their business skills. This program provides the opportunity for local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders working in Indigenous owned business enterprises to build on their skills and knowledge to effectively and efficiently manage their operations and to assist with securing commercial contracts.

This program focuses on the developmental needs of each individual and their business and tailors the learning to maximize value. Participants get to test their ideas and business proposals out on mentors from BP Australia in a safe and supportive environment. This one on one arrangement has proved highly successful in converting good intentions into winning commercial contracts within the mining sector.

Why is BP doing this program?

BP is a major supplier to the mining industry and we acknowledge the key role we occupy in supporting communities where we operate in partnership with our customers. Building strong business activity in these regions is a key part of strengthening the community and we believe this program will achieve due to the unique buy-in of supplier, customer and community working together.

BP’s Protocols for Welcome to Country and Acknowledgement of Traditional Ownership

A Welcome to Country is where an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander custodian or elder from the local area or region welcome people to their land.
Welcome to Country always occurs at the opening of an event and is usually the first item on the program.
