UK graduate intake up by 50% in 2012
BP will take on 244 UK graduates this year – and 100 of them will get the chance to work at the Olympic Games before they join the company in September
BP announced today (2 February) that it will be taking on 244 UK graduates in 2012 – that's 50% more than 2011 – and 100 of the new recruits will get the chance to work for the London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) before they start with BP in September.
The lucky 100 will be given short-term secondments in areas such as the athletes' village, transport or communications. The secondments will be offered to the new graduates on a first-come, first-served basis and BP will provide them with an internship salary, accommodation and transport costs.
BP's country head in the UK Peter Mather said: "This is an investment in people and an investment in Britain. These graduate recruits are not only part of our future as a company but the UK's future as an industrial nation.

"As a global company based in the UK we know how competitive and challenging today's economy is and we're glad to be able to offer these career opportunities. It is more important than ever to build skills in engineering, science and technology to help us rise to the challenge of meeting the world's increasing demand for energy."
Emma Judge, BP's head of UK graduate recruitment, said: "BP is hiring more bright young minds than ever before and I'm sure the UK's young science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) community will be pleased to hear we are ramping up our recruitment again this year.
"Being one of the leading UK graduate employers and an official partner of the London 2012 Games, we wanted a special welcome for the graduates joining BP this year, so what better way than starting their careers with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. This will be a memorable experience – a fantastic opportunity for students in a truly unique setting."
Double Olympic gold medallist Dame Kelly Holmes has given her support to today's announcement. She said: "Throughout my career, focus and determination has played a critical role in my success. It's great to see the UK's next generation of business talent being equally as focused and determined to achieve their goals. I can't think of a better way for a graduate to start their career than a London 2012 secondment. It's fantastic that one of the official partners of the London 2012 Games is giving graduates this exclusive opportunity."
As well as being one of the biggest graduate recruiters in the UK, BP recruits nearly 1,000 worldwide, mostly from STEM backgrounds. It also takes on more than 130 summer and one-year paid interns in the UK.
