Training and development

Your development, both professional and personal, matters to us. Our industry is constantly changing and the demand for energy is escalating. We need to be at the cutting edge of new technology developments if we’re going to continue to supply the world with energy safely, sustainably and consistently. We’re also well aware that top talent – people like you – will only remain with an employer if that employer invests properly in them. So we do. That’s why when you join BP, you become part of a specially-designed graduate Challenger Programme.

A broader approach

This comprehensive development programme will serve as a foundation for your future career at BP; on-the-job learning will develop your practical skills, not to mention confidence, and structured training will ensure you have up-to-date knowledge in your chosen discipline. You’ll be able to reinforce what you have learned whilst performing your day to day responsibilities. Finally, we’ll ensure your “soft skills” are continuously being developed, giving you coaching on things like presentation skills and communication.

Job placements

Global, integrated and holistic, the programme comprises two separate job placements. Each lasts between 18-24 months, and each will expose you to the specific issues faced by the business area. Don’t expect to be treated like a “graduate”. We’ll expose you to real work right from the start, and your input and ideas will matter. We expect you to drive, not to be a passenger.

Upstream

Wide-ranging opportunities

Join Upstream as a graduate in any role and you’ll automatically enter our Challenger Programme. Over the course of three years, you’ll be introduced to a variety of opportunities designed to develop your skills and deepen your knowledge. Once you’ve completed the programme, you’ll have the confidence to face a wide range of new challenges.

Learning and development

Structured and effective discipline coaching will sharpen your technical edge, while business-specific learning programmes will develop both your technical knowledge and your interpersonal skills. Additionally, you’ll be exposed to development assessment reviews which will help you track your progress and plan your work and learning during the programme. But as well as gaining practical, hands-on experience, it’s also essential that you learn the theories that underpin our work: your first comprehensive induction, for example, is a twelve-day learning experience based around multi-disciplinary teamwork, field work, case studies and lectures.

Broader exposure

Whatever your role, and whatever business area you’re in, we’ll make sure that you receive the right experience, exposure and training to develop your competencies. You’ll only graduate from the programme once you’ve reached the required level of expertise in your specific discipline. BP’s graduate programmes aren’t easy. They’re not meant to be. But you’ll find everything you do with us incredibly stimulating and intellectually satisfying. Ultimately, the programme will help you make the most out of your career – and help us make the most out of our business. We believe these two ambitions go hand-in-hand.
