Our reporting boundaries and scope
BP Sustainability Review 2012 and bp.com/sustainability concentrate on performance and activities from 1 January to 31 December 2012
We aim to report on all aspects of our business, including joint ventures where we are the operator. Where appropriate, we also seek to provide an overview of joint venture activities where we are not the operator, but where we have significant influence on our partners.
BP reports annual health, safety, security and environment (HSSE) data from operations within our ‘control’ boundary. For operated joint ventures, HSSE data is calculated and consolidated under our control boundary.
Defining simple and transparent HSSE reporting boundaries is complex in an organization such as BP because of our size, the range of activities we undertake and the complex arrangements, such as joint ventures, we use to share risk in large projects.

‘Control’
By ‘control’ we mean we either own the assets and engage or employ the workforce, or we operate the asset under a contractual obligation to the owners.
Reporting
HSSE information is consolidated and reported as ‘BP’ from assets under our control. In assets where we have influence, we may choose to report information externally if it is of specific interest and applicable agreements allow.
An exception to this is our reporting of greenhouse gas emissions, which we report for all consolidated entities and BP’s share of equity-accounted entities except TNK-BP. Further information on TNK-BP’s greenhouse gas emissions can be found in its sustainability report.
