Global Reporting Initiative

BP uses the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G3.1 guidelines, a comprehensive set of indicators covering all dimensions of sustainable development
The GRI provides a framework against which all types of organizations can track and report their economic, environmental and social performance. This standardized approach allows for greater transparency and accountability, as well as benchmarking against previous years’ and peer companies’ performance.

The GRI guidelines help ensure BP covers relevant topics, identified by a broader range of stakeholders, which are generic to sustainability reporting by any organization.
BP’s 2012 Sustainability Review applies the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)’s G3.1 sustainability reporting guidelines to an A+ level. Key to achieving this was the application of our materiality process to ensure we reported on the indicators relevant to our businesses. For indicators that we have not reported, we have provided detail on why we have not included certain information in our report where appropriate.

This is our first year reporting against the GRI’s updated G3.1 sustainability reporting guidelines and the GRI Oil and Gas Sector Supplement (OGSS). We were actively involved in the development of the OGSS and our existing processes enable us to report fully or partially against 12 of the 14 indicators.
Opportunities remain for us to improve our data collection processes and we aim to achieve this for a number of indicators in future.
