The PX plant in Geel produces, besides paraxylene, also benzene and fuel additives.
Benzene and fuel additives are by-products, which are formed inadvertently during the process. However, they are not wasted as both benzene and fuel additives are used as useful raw materials for other applications.
Benzene produced at Geel is used elsewhere for the production of styrene. Subsequently, this styrene can be converted into polystyrene for example. We know this substance among others in the form of polystyrene foam, an important insulating material in the construction industry.
Fuel additives are used in refineries as an additive for the production of petrol.
