Championing the pilots of tomorrow

With the aviation industry experiencing a global pilot shortage, we’re committed to helping aspiring pilots in the UK achieve their Private Pilot’s Licence (PPL) through our Sterling Pilot Scholarship scheme.

We launched the scholarship programme in 2015 and it has already helped two of three students reach their ambition of becoming commercial airline pilots. Stephen Daly from the Republic of Ireland became our fourth scholar in September and was delighted with the news of his scholarship, which is valued at around £10,000.

I am incredibly grateful to Air BP for the funding. The Sterling Pilot Scholarship has given me an opportunity to work towards a career as a commercial airline pilot that I simply wouldn’t have been able to fund myself, or at least nowhere near as fast.

With almost 800,000 new civil aviation pilots required to fly the world’s fleet over the next 20 years, and demand from the Far East outstripping global supply, the pilot shortage is a real industry concern.

Schemes like our Sterling Pilot Scholarship are crucial in creating an environment that supports aspiring pilots. Our investment in the scholarship also underpins our desire to support and encourage young people to gain a better understanding of the importance of a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education for their future.
