The future is green

Last month saw the return of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship to Russia for the third time, as pilots took to the skies above Kazan in an adrenalin-fuelled race.

The capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, Kazan is also known as the ‘Sports Capital of Russia’ so was a fitting host for the latest World Championship. The city is home to more than a million people and spectators from far and wide lined the Kazanka River on 15 and 16 June to watch pilots as they competed on an aerial racetrack designed to push them to their limits.

Congratulations to Japanese pilot, Yoshihide Muroya, who took the win in Kazan, closely followed by Matt Hall from Australia and the reigning world champion, Martin Sonka.

There’s little time to rest however, as this month will see the pilots head to the picture-postcard location of Lake Balaton in Hungary to compete in the next championship, which will take place 13-14 July. If you’re planning on catching the action in the popular resort of Zamardi, then Budapest Airport (BUD/ LHBP) is open 24 hours and is approximately a 1h 40 minute drive away.  There is also a frequent train service between the two locations.
