BP confirmed its commitment to create 500 new jobs by 2020 at the opening of its new shared services office in Szeged, Hungary

Global Business Services, BP’s award-winning shared services organization, is opening the new office following the success of its other service centres across the world, which includes a major centre in Budapest.

BP elected to grow its European operations in this location because of the city’s excellent infrastructure, its proximity to Budapest, and the city’s University, which produces high-calibre graduates, many of whom BP expects to recruit.

At the opening a number of international BP representatives were joined by Levente Magyar, deputy to the minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Dr. László Botka, the mayor of Szeged.

The ongoing co-operation and support of local and national government bodies was highlighted in an opening speech by Vice-President of Global Business Services, Brian Puffer, who also commented on the welcoming nature of the city.

He said: “What stood Szeged apart when we started looking to expand our operations last year was the enthusiasm from the community and the support from the government, both local and national.

“We start operations here today with more than 270 professional highly capable people, hired into high quality roles. By 2020, we intend to have 500 employees here in Szeged (subject to consultation). They will join 5,500 people in BP’s global business services organization, located in 10 countries and working in more than 15 languages. Collectively, these people drive value for BP by standardizing and increasing the efficiency of our business processes.”

Already a significant employer across Hungary, BP will recruit the 500 new employees (subject to consultation) into a wide variety of skilled positions delivering important work across finance, procurement, human resources, commodity trading and customer service management. This includes leadership positions.

New employees will be expected to have proficiency in two or more European languages, a desire to be part of a high performing team and a commitment to uphold the company’s values, including its drive to embrace diversity.
