Career story: Nigar

Well Planning Geologist Nigar gives an insight into her career with BP

Nigar Sadigova has worked with BP since 2003, through roles with SOCAR, Schlumberger and Halliburton, and since 2015 as a Well Planning Geologist employed by BP in Baku, Azerbaijan.

An Azeri national, Nigar grew up in Baku, the first of two daughters to their finance analyst father and geologist mother. As a child Nigar was passionate about playing the piano and initially thought she would pursue a career in music but, at the age of sixteen, a conversation with her mother about her work as a geologist changed that.

Nigar’s interest piqued, she agreed to go along with her mother to a field trip and became fascinated with what she saw. Consequently Nigar set about pursuing a geology related career, like her mother before her, and grandfather also. Curiously a similar pattern followed with Nigar’s younger sister who initially was keen to pursue a career in finance but became similarly allured by their mother’s work and now also works in the same profession
Graduating from the State Oil Academy with a BSc in Geophysics, Nigar joined SOCAR, the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic, as a junior geoscientist. Two years later Nigar applied for a coveted place (75 applicants for four places) on a one year non-degree graduate programme in Geology at the Texas A&M University, sponsored by the American Geological Institute, in Texas USA. Nigar was one of the brilliant four and, after a year in Texas, returned to work at SOCAR as a geophysicist.

Working at SOCAR gave Nigar the opportunity to work with many of the other major oil companies with which her employer partnered including BP. In 2003 Nigar came to the UK, to Sunbury, and worked with the BP team onsite before returning to Baku. 2003 was the also the year in which Nigar married her husband, also an Azeri, and over the next few years they had three sons.
In 2006, Nigar joined Schlumberger – SIS division in Baku, Azerbaijan, as an applications support engineer. In a year, Nigar progressed as an SIS account manager continuing in Baku, Azerbaijan.

In 2011, Nigar was given the opportunity to join Halliburton to work for BP in-house as a geoscientist consultant. Explains Nigar: “Life in BP is progressive and over the years working in partnership with BP, first at SOCAR and then Halliburton, I was always impressed by its culture. As an organisation, BP really knows how to get the best out of people.”
There is a real respect for family here too, which is very important to my husband and I; and enabled us to achieve the perfect balance – a stimulating, supportive work environment and quality time with our family

In 2014, Nigar was invited to apply to BP as a geologist working in the NWD team in Baku through BP’s Employee Referral Programme which rewards employees who successfully utilise their personal and professional networks to help fill roles in the organisation.

“My role as a well planning geologist is wonderful and far reaching. It’s not just about geology, but drilling, completions and reservoir management in general. As such, I work with a range of people, as one team, delivering safe and reliable solutions that work for the community and the business.

"What is more, at BP you are surrounded by brilliant people who you work with and learn from, together – lots of experts, lots of sharing of knowledge. It’s a fantastic environment to work and develop in – personally and professionally.

"There is a real respect for family here too, which is very important to my husband and I; and enabled us to achieve the perfect balance – a stimulating, supportive work environment and quality time with our family.”
