We’re presented with many opportunities. It’s the nature of our business. But we can’t invest in all of them. We have to decide which ventures are wise, and how much money to invest in the ones that meet our criteria. Above all, we need to evaluate when the commercial risks outweigh the potential returns.

We’re involved in some of the most technically advanced and complex energy projects in the world. When a business cycle often spans a decade from initial discoveries and negotiations on land rights through to site planning and construction, there is a huge amount of information to evaluate and consider. Our expert commercial teams work together to ensure we continue to make sound decisions – decisions that safeguard the future of global energy supplies and do not compromise our values and ethics.

Planning

Whether it’s our infrastructure or your development, we’re always thinking ahead

BP’s business is the exploration, production, refining, trading and distribution of energy. This is what we do and we do it all over the world – so our infrastructure stretches across the globe and ranges from platforms and pipelines to plants and terminals.  

Our planning function is responsible for making sure that all routine maintenance, preventative maintenance, inspections, audits and outages are meticulously planned, scheduled and delivered. It’s a fascinating area in which to build a varied career and develop a wide range of skills. 

Planning entails everything from producing detailed work plans using IT tools like SAP and managing people, equipment and materials, to optimizing budgets and championing continuous improvement in planning processes. Safety is the overriding priority at BP, so everything needs to be done in compliance with the strictest health, safety, security and environment (HSSE) standards. 

We look for talented people with experience of planning and scheduling maintenance work – particularly if this has been gained in the petrochemical industry – and ideally a relevant qualification. As well as a sharp eye for detail and strong organizational capabilities, you’ll need good people skills. Knowledge of HSSE risks would be useful and some roles also call for coaching or training experience.
