Our Future Leaders Programme (FLP) attracts and develops talented professionals with post-graduate degrees and accelerates their progression to leadership roles in key parts of our Downstream business. The programme is global and is made up of two 24-month assignments, one of which could be international. Joining Commercial, Technology or Sales, Marketing & Retail, you’ll benefit from dedicated support, exceptional exposure to our business ambitions and strategy, plenty of opportunities to network and the chance to develop your leadership and technical capabilities to enable your progression to a leadership role.

Bringing great people with wide-ranging experiences into BP early in their careers is key to our talent strategy. By building on those experiences and fresh perspectives in a structured way, we aim to maximise the potential of these people to be great leaders in our businesses for years to come. Already the FLP has generated numerous success stories. There are specific examples of people who have progressed to Group Leadership in BP or are currently leading large businesses across multiple countries.

What the programme offers

You’ll have a permanent role from day one. So expect a well-structured, stretching and immersive development programme offering vast exposure in a global environment. The FLP is highly respected by our existing senior leaders who will advise and guide you as you explore opportunities to advance your skills and know-how, and accelerate your progression into a leadership role. And all this is on top of an excellent rewards package.

Training and development

We’ll build on your professional background, honing your ability to lead and develop others as well as the technical skills you’ll need to excel in your discipline. You can look forward to development through experience, exposure and education, including:

  •  two rotations relating to your capability area that will help you build the right technical skills
  • structured learning and development offer focused on developing your leadership capability and technical skills
  • opportunities to attend networking events across your capability area and the broader FLP community, exposure to senior leaders and an annual Global Event for FLP community
  • interaction and visibility with senior leaders and support from a formal business sponsor, professional mentor and line manager

Key requirements and attributes

Our Downstream business is where we supply, trade, refine, transport, manufacture and market our products. It’s a diverse operation and its workforce - including its leaders - is just as diverse. However, as well as holding an MBA, PhD, MSc or MEng, those who benefit most from the programme have other things in common:

  • Relevant work experience in Commercial, Technology or Sales, Marketing & Retail so they can hit the ground running
  • Commercial awareness and the potential to progress to leadership roles
  • Demonstrated personal effectiveness in the skills aligned to BP’s Leadership Expectations (Energize Others, Maximize Value, Build Enduring Capability and Lead through our Values)
  • Ideally a flexible approach to work location and placement

Training development and support

The ultimate aim of the Future Leaders Programme is to develop, stretch and challenge your skills, so you should be flexible and prepared to work in a position that will truly test you. You’ll take part in two, two year rotational  job experiences within a distinctive capability area.

We pride ourselves on giving the right support so you can achieve your full potential. You’ll receive structured training through our leadership development programmes, as well as more technical subjects related to your discipline. At every step you’ll have a dedicated mentor and access to our senior leaders who will advise, support and guide you on your journey.

With your level of ambition and initiative, we ‘ll also expect you to actively seek feedback from them so you can shape and drive your development. There are opportunities to attend annual conferences and dedicated FLP networking events. You’ll be part of a supportive community where you can share experiences with people who are as bright and capable as you are.
