Overview

Supply and trading is BP's face to the traded markets in oil, gas, power, emissions, chemicals and finance. Its role is to enhance performance and maximize group value for our assets through distinctive supply, commodity trading, risk management and information technology, underpinned by a world-class finance, control and compliance infrastructure.

Wherever you join us, you’ll be part of a unique, diverse, multi-national organization which will give you exposure to both supply and trading. Our trading environment is different because it’s not part of a large financial institution. Yet it’s one of the largest in the world and has hubs in London, Chicago, Houston, Calgary and Singapore.

Roles and responsibilities

Each program is designed to give you maximum exposure to our supply and trading business. You will be working on projects with real impacts to our bottom line. You’ll be placed in a team that best matches your skillset and ambitions, and be an integral part of the team’s success.

Throughout, you will have on the job training as well as face to face and online learning to develop technical and soft skills.  Alongside this, a graduate buddy will help you network and learn everything you need to perform in your role.

Our internships are designed for penultimate year students which means that when returning to university for your final year, you could have a graduate role lined up for the following year. You should be on track for a second uppers class honours degree (or equivalent) in any discipline plus a strong academic record. Beyond this, you’ll have drive, innovative thinking, entrepreneurial spirit and the ability to get on well with colleagues.

Discovery days - first or second year university students


Available in the UK, Singapore and Canada

Join us for a supply and trading discovery day, and you will have an opportunity to experience our working environment, From our trading floors, to our functional areas, you will get seem it all. Our graduates and interns will be happy to talk about their roles and experiences, you might take part in a trading game and workshops to help you improve your soft  skills.

Summer internships - penultimate year

Available in the UK, the US, Singapore and Canada

Our 11  week paid internships give you the opportunity to gain real business experience in the summer before your final year. And this may lead to an offer of a place on one of our graduate programmes.

Analytics

This will give you exposure to our front office business; from trading to market analytics, origination, and commercial development through to strategy. Your internship will be a dynamic 11-week journey that will provide the ideal environment in which to start and develop a career analysing energy markets and the factors that drive them. During the programme, you will be assessed for your suitability for the analytics graduate scheme.

Commercial

Our commercial summer internship programme will give you as much exposure as possible to our front office business. We’ll ensure you have everything you need to understand the commercial aspects of our business. We offer a number of unique opportunities for interns who are keen to build a commercial career. During this programme, you will be assessed for your suitability for the commercial graduate scheme. We may also be able to consider you for the trading graduate scheme.

Finance and risk 

You could be hosted by a range of teams including accounting, reporting and control, operational excellence or commodity risk.  Over 11 weeks, as well as doing a range of real work, you will also have a number of technical and soft skills training sessions as well as an opportunity to meet a range of BP colleagues.  At the end, you’ll deliver presentations on what you’ve gained from the experience and what you will be doing in future.

Technology

We deliver innovative IT to the business, enhancing supply and commodity trading activity across supply and trading's global gas and oil strategic performance units. Systems, software and architecture play a significant role in the development of our business and information technology is one of the most important factors in keeping trading and traders ahead of the competition. Our business offers a number of unique opportunities for interns who are keen to build a career in technology. During this programme, you will be assessed for your suitability for the technology graduate scheme. We may also be able to consider you for the trading graduate scheme.

Trading

Our trading summer internship programme will give you exposure to our front office business; from trading to market analytics, origination, and commercial development through to strategy. Our business offers a number of unique opportunities for interns who are keen to build a career in trading. During this programme, you will be assessed for your suitability for the trading graduate scheme. We may also be able consider you for the commercial graduate scheme.

Supply and trading discovery week - first or second year university students

The supply and trading discovery week is designed to give you an idea of the breadth of opportunity in supply and trading, providing valuable insight into the energy industry and how supply and trading enhances BP group value through supply, trading, risk management, marketing and analytics.

An induction day is followed by three days of rotations, and you’ll take part in workshops, skills and development sessions. On the final day, you’ll be invited to take part in the scenario based technical interview for our analytics, commercial or trading internships.

The programme is open to students due to graduate in 2021 and acts as a fast track to a 2020 summer internship.

One year internships - penultimate year

Available in the UK

Our year-long paid internships are a perfect stepping stone to a permanent role with us. And you could also gain a place on one of our graduate programmes.

Commercial

Based either in the Crude Knowledge Team or the Demurrage Team in Canary Wharf, London, you will gain real exposure to our trading environment. As a Crude Oil Analyst intern, you’ll support BP’s Crude Oil Trading and Refinery Planning operations in a highly visible, operational role. Join the Demurrage team instead, and you will manage your own portfolio of demurrage claims and post fixture expenses on behalf of your trading bench.

During this programme, you will be assessed for your suitability for the commercial graduate scheme. We may also be able to consider you for the trading graduate scheme as well.
