Environmental performance

bp’s PTA process technology features lower environmental impact¹ as compared to conventional PTA technology

bp’s PTA technology has been recognized as delivering excellent environmental performance. For example, our Zhuhai site has recently received China’s “Excellence in Energy Conservation Award” and “Water Conservation Enterprise Award”. The process integration, recycle loops, and energy recovery elements of bp PTA technology result in a 33% reduction in raw water usage, and an 87% reduction in DI water usage¹. In addition, we estimate that our latest generation PTA technology delivers 65% fewer greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, 75% less water discharge and 95% less solid waste disposal than conventional PTA technology of the 1990s¹.

Some examples where bp technology reduces the greenhouse gas footprint  and waste emissions are:

  • A highly efficient anaerobic reactor which converts waste to fuel
  • Internal recycle of the PTA mother liquor streams to reduce wastewater flow and recover energy
  • A highly efficient Catalyst Recovery unit to recover catalyst metals allowing direct re-use without a third party reclaimer
  • Improved Oxidation reactor design which minimizes acetic acid and paraxylene burning
  • Efficient heat integration to minimize the burning of fossil fuels to produce high pressure steam
  • Internal recycle and minimization of DI water import
  • More energy recovery from the reaction leads to less heat ejected to cooling water
  • WWT effluent recycle and other cooling tower options (e.g., seawater) can reduce raw water consumption even further
