Job summary

Applied Sciences is the centralized scientific resource within bp focused on driving bp’s transition into a net zero company by 2050 or before. We are the home of bp’s scientists with expertise built on a foundation of outstanding laboratory experimentation. We provide products and solutions to meet market needs and lead the longer-term technology agenda. We identify emerging trends and innovate to develop energy pathways and platforms that will provide the future pipeline for our net zero transition.

We develop and support bp’s differentiated fuels & Castrol products and target innovative low carbon and bio process solutions.

About the role
The Applied Sciences Computational Science team is under bp’s Advanced Biology and Physical Sciences for Low Carbon Energy. We are driving innovation for accelerated discovery through biological and chemical simulation and modelling at multiple scales.

Computational Sciences is important to bp and the team works as a resource for modelling expertise across Applied Sciences and the entire business, supporting groups including Production & Operations, Digital Science & Engineering, and Gas & Low Carbon Energy. Computational Sciences works closely with experimentalists to effectively generate and manage high-quality data and produce business-relevant insights and predictive models. The team is comprised of flexible, agile, multi-skilled, innovative members that work collaboratively across the research portfolio. Areas of expertise include:

  • Molecular modelling

  • Computational enzyme design

  • Metabolic modelling

  • Microbial and environmental data analytics

  • Data science for analysis of molecules, metabolisms, and microbiomes

Beyond various modelling support, the team works on the groundbreaking of computational chemistry, bioinformatics, and data science and works with multidisciplinary bp and external technology innovation groups, exploring everything from environmental DNA, synthetic biology & DNA storage, to biodiversity sensors, AI, and quantum computing. Not only will you learn physics-based and modeling algorithms and techniques to drive insights and discovery, but also state-of-the-art technologies that can be used to help drive the world to net zero.

This role is part of a development program where for three years you will work in three different areas within Applied Sciences - giving you exposure to the following activity sets:

  • Research & Innovation

  • Analytics, Testing and Modeling

  • Product Development & Quality Assurance

  • Technical Support

  • Global Products stewardship

  • Intellectual asset management

  • Demonstration & Commercialize

About You

  • Develop computational models for biology and chemistry (e.g., molecular, microbial, environmental)

  • Assist in integrating and building knowledge databases (e.g., cloud) to enable predictive modeling

  • Evaluate emerging computational biology and chemistry technologies and how they may be applied for areas of interest to bp

Minimum Requirements

  • Must have cumulative and major GPA of 3.2 or higher

  • Must be in final year, graduating by May 2022

  • Pursuing a PhD degree in computational sciences, bioinformatics, chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, physics, or related fields

  • Knowledge of high-level computer programming languages and machine learning/statistical tools

  • Must be open for relocation within the United States, but your first and final posting is likely to be in San Diego, CA

Desirable Criteria

  • Ability to prioritize responsibilities, organize and multi-task in a multidisciplinary environment, and work independently

  • Self-motivated with an enthusiastic, proactive, and passionate approach to learn and inspire

  • Imaginative and creative problem solver

  • Energetic communicator and collaborator
