Control & Assurance Advisor

This vacancy sits within the entity-wide Control & Assurance team in bp’s Accounting, Reporting & Control (ARC) function, which is a major part of bp’s global Finance organization.

This role is charged with supporting bp’s assurance over our externally reported Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) and non-financial reporting (NFR). Control & Assurance combines finance skills, business knowledge, and a transformation approach to support reporting of our net zero ambition using skilled technical competence to ensure we meet our regulatory reporting requirements.

ESG-NFR reporting is wide ranging and a rapidly growing landscape, covering areas such as business operating and ESG metrics. As well as underpinning reinvented bp’s net zero vision and strategic aims, ESG-NFR is a key area focus for investors, regulators, and the general public. Forthcoming legislation will increase the assurance and reporting requirements in this area.

A key focus of the team is to transform bp’s assurance over ESG-NFR, including compliance with forthcoming regulations and other controls and processes supporting the company’s ESG-NFR reporting. To deliver these accountabilities in a robust, significant, and efficient way, you will help us to:

  • Undertake assurance over bp’s ESG-NFR, both of underlying metrics and of the corporate reporting suite (e.g., Annual Report, Sustainability Report, Diversity & Inclusion, etc.)
  • Design and deploy new assurance products through digital tools and technology
  • Develop a keen understanding of non-financial reporting and control risks and ways to manage and mitigate these
In Control & Assurance, you will have ample opportunities of working across the team, to support entity-wide finance control teams and our transformation projects. The team prides itself on its agile approach and you will build enduring relationships with bp leadership and peers and influence across the three lines of defense and external auditors.

Key Accountabilities:
  • Undertake assurance of externally reported ESG-NFR metrics and narrative content
  • Consider the impact of forthcoming legislation on the ESG-NFR control and assurance framework
  • Provide controls support to the ESG-NFR metric owners, many of whom are not in finance.
  • Take the lead on projects/activities to migrate current manual control and assurance activities to a more preventative, data-driven, and risk-based environment
  • Provide valuable input into the design of ESG-NFR policies and procedures to facilitate redesign of assurance activities
  • Regularly engage with our external auditors to understand their outlook of bp’s ESG-NFR assurance
  • Support other Control & Assurance teams in business partnering control, compliance and risk management, and our transformation projects.
Essential Education:
  • University degree and accounting qualification (CFA, ACA, CIMA, ACMA, etc.) or MBA
Essential Skills and Experience:
  • Experience in ESG-NFR landscape
  • Experience in control frameworks and assurance/ audit
  • Innovative use of new technologies (e.g., Power BI, Power Apps, etc.)
  • Challenges existing ways of working and identifies quick wins and strategic solutions
  • Self-directed performer and team-oriented player with capacity to step-in to support colleagues
  • Strong continuous improvement approach and drive for excellence
  • Agile training and a working understanding of Agile techniques
  • Experience of having worked in a hydrocarbon business
