Job summary

Responsible for advising the businesses and functions on ethics and compliance initiatives and adherence to policy, using advanced technical knowledge and experience to ensure conformance to all related internal and external policies and regulations and to help embed the BP ethics and compliance culture.

Ethics & Compliance specialist

  • The E&C Specialist will act as the I&E Subject Matter Expert for International Trade Regulations (ITR) export controls (and sanctions/ supplier boycott as appropriate).
  • Risk Identification & Management
  • Annually, or as required, assess the current I&E ITR risk statement in Digital Risk Manager (DRM), and ensure that documented risk mitigations remain effective.
  • Co-ordinate with I&E ITR SPAs and Group E&C ITR team on the overall risk management plan in I&E and align activities.
  • Attend and participate in the ITR Global Compliance Team quarterly updates and ensure any new advice relating to new ITR legislation (export controls and Trade Sanctions) is applied in I&E as appropriate.
  • Support Group E&C ITR work with Procurement to ensure that ITR risks are managed during the procurement process with initial focus on software acquisition.
  • Support Group E&C ITR to conduct ITR risk assessment(s) in I&E sub entities to identify any changes in ITR risk.
  • Raise awareness of Group E&C ITR policy and related procedures and guides, and ensure specific guidance is published for I&E as required (e.g. AS Portfolio Review, digital SCCM process, digital product review)
  • Create or tailor ITR education and awareness materials, and provide any necessary training and support for E&C champions to deliver these materials
  • Deliver or support delivery of general ITR training required from the RER outcome and provide tailored ITR training sessions where appropriate.
  • Raise awareness of ITR Risk Assessment tool to be completed for individual projects as required, and support teams with any queries.
  • Operational activities
  • Provide operational support for the ITR project/product level risk assessment, including assessing Export Control risk for software packaging requests;
  • Provide operational support for the Export Control application with Ethics & Compliance service owner;
  • Implement and manage an effective Export Control regulatory reporting framework, with the Software Packaging Team and Group E&C ITR SMEs;
  • Support Managing ECL with any ITR related investigations or relevant reports;
  • Provide reporting metrics on ITR activity as agreed with the I&E ECL.
  • The E&C specialist will support the I&E ECL in:
  • further embedding ethics and compliance in I&E
  • promoting the Code of Conduct, who we are culture framework, Speak Up culture and other campaigns through communications and knowledge sharing;
  • responding to ethics and compliance enquiries and requests for advice;
  • completing the risk identification and reporting activities including for the Risk Management Review
  • planning, strategy & communication of key E&C activities such as implementation of the refreshed Code of Conduct
  • running I&E E&C Champions network
Essential Education
University degree or equivalent professional qualification or experience.
Essential Experience and Job Requirements:
  • A good understanding of BP’s Code of Conduct and ‘who we are’ culture framework
  • An active interest in ethical behaviours and building a positive culture
  • Good analytical and drafting skills, effective prioritisation, problem-solving and planning skills.
  • Self-confidence to take a firm stand and energetic persistence in seeking solutions to complex issues
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to apply these skills at different levels of the organisation
  • Strong work ethic and creative ability to achieve identified goals, both individually and as a team player.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues across BP
  • Ability to deliver the Ethics and Compliance agenda in a creative and collaborative manner
  • Strong awareness / sensitivity to different cultures
Desirable Criteria:
  • Prior experience of risk management activities, e.g. in an E&C, audit, finance, legal, regulatory or safety environment.
