The advanced bio & physical sciences for low carbon energy team is the central research organisation for biosciences, chemistry, materials sciences, fundamental biofuels pathways, green hydrogen/ electrochemistry, and the science of carbon capture. This team also incorporates computational modelling of biosciences and chemistry.

The Biosciences Center (BSC) works to identify current opportunities and assess future opportunities across the range of bp’s businesses, supporting bp’s ambition to reach net zero by 2050 or sooner. The Center stays closely connected to bp businesses and external technologies, and ensures the expertise required to progress opportunities through the early stages of technology development. The Center also advises businesses on biological issues and partnership opportunities. The team is comprised of flexible, agile, multi-skilled, innovative members that work collaboratively across the research portfolio.

This position will report to the Senior Manager for US Bioenergies and will develop new strategies in second generation (2G) biofuels production by developing conceptual designs. This role will also be closely associated with our engineering scale-up team, who are looking at pathways related to biomass conversion. Given the breadth of biofuel production opportunities, the successful candidate will have prior experience in both biochemical and thermochemical conversion technologies. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have a deep technical understanding of integrating biomass deconstruction with biological upgrading processes.


Job Description:

Key accountabilities

  • Serve as subject matter expert in 2G biofuels production strategies.
  • Take the technical lead in early technology appraisal studies and/or due diligence studies, including techno-economic assessments related to all conversion strategies.
  • Lead efforts to develop new conceptual models to deliver insight into research programmes.
  • Design detailed experimental plans and analyze the results from R&D demonstrations.
  • Serve as a link to other biosciences capability teams, synthetic biology, biochemistry/ enzymology, microbiology and analytical.
  • Promote safety initiatives and champion compliance with bp’s Code of Conduct.
  • Attention to detail and trouble-shooting skills
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary environment, both independently and within a project team
  • Understand business needs. SLead efforts to set effective strategies for internal capability development, external collaboration partners and 3rd party toll manufactures.

Essential criteria and qualifications:

  • Education: Masters/PhD degree (with 12+ years) (or bachelors with relevant experience) from the following fields: bioengineering, chemical engineering, or related fields. Experience proven by a track record of publications or through relevant job experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of process design, economic analysis, thermodynamics, heat and material balances.
  • Expert in process simulation - including detailed use of ASPEN or PETROSIM
  • Advanced understanding of biomass conversion pathways and critical processing steps including biomass deconstruction, biological upgrading of intermediates, and chemical catalytic conversion is required. A basic understanding of additional conversion technologies such as gasification and pyrolysis is also desired.
  • Demonstrated field experience at various scales – from laboratory to commercial – with experience starting up first-of-a-kind process technology / integration.
  • Extensive proven experience assessing a range of technology options with respect to economics, scale-up risks and uncertainties, and technical readiness levels.

Desirable criteria

  • Basic understanding of life cycle assessment and current policies for low-carbon energy strategies.
  • Outstanding inter-disciplinary problem solving and critical thinking skills, with a passion for scientific innovation and low carbon technology. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to interact effectively with technical experts and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience and ability to work optimally in a multi-tasking, fast pace, and matrix environment, with skills on prioritizing, delivery and being flexible in response to change.
  • Ability to provide expert advice and clear recommendations, and to propose insights and develop solutions to sophisticated problems.
  • Demonstrated elements of leadership, especially with external technology providers, to drive delivery of a program.

$141,000 - $261,000
