Job summary

Role Synopsis

  • The Expert Technologist, China Growth is expected to have a unique combination of skill sets of lubricant technology, strategy and sustainability.
  • This role supports the Director of Castrol China Technology Center (CCTC) to develop, maintain and implement a differentiated strategy and roadmap for CCTC in alignment with Applied Sciences and Castrol business strategies. The role holder is also expected to coordinate with other bp units (e.g., FM&S, RC&S) to explore developing CCTC into a technology and customer experiencing center for the wider bp.
  • The role holder is expected to show capability in assessing technical organization performance, developing technology strategies and implementing processes that improve organizational effectiveness and build a sustainable competitive advantage.
  • This role is accountable for leading the overall sustainability agenda of CCTC in line with bp’s net-zero ambition and delivering specific sustainability projects in collaboration with both global and local key stakeholders in marketing, procurement and technology.
  • The role holder is also expected to have proficiency in lubricant technology and may be required to lead specific technology deployment projects depending on priorities and workload demands.
  • This role is critical in supporting CCTC’s engagement with external collaboration partners and managing open innovation with identified research institute and industry partners.

Key Accountabilities

  • Lead Castrol China Technology Center (CCTC) strategic activities in collaboration with LT and other cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Lead the development and implementation of a differentiated strategy and roadmap for CCTC in line with Castrol China business strategies.
  • Provide support to the Director of CCTC in managing strategic infrastructure and operational programmes in support of CCTC future development.
  • Coordinate with other bp units (e.g., FM&S, RC&S) and Applied Sciences to develop CCTC into a beyond-lubricant technology and customer experiencing center for the wider bp.
  • Lead the overall sustainability agenda and act as sustainability expert of CCTC in line with bp’s net-zero ambition. Deliver specific sustainability projects in collaboration with both global and local key stakeholders in marketing, procurement and technology.
  • Lead specific technology deployment projects depending on priorities and workload demands.
  • Drive open innovation and identify and implement collaboration opportunities with research institute and industry partners.
  • Present technical material at customer events and at external technical seminars/conferences, drive technical advocacy.

Essential Education
  • MSc degree in chemistry or chemical engineering or related field. PhD degree is a plus.

Essential Experience and Job Requirements
  • A minimum of 10 years industry experience in technical roles in the Chemical or applied chemistry discipline with customer facing activities.
  • Broad knowledge of lubricant technology across automotive and industrial segments.
  • Good understanding of sustainability and strong interests in driving sustainability initiatives.
  • Strong track record of working directly with customers to resolve technical and application issues.
  • Demonstrated collaborative approach to working and networking with subject matter experts and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Excellent interpersonal and influencing skills, both internally and externally.
  • Strong project management skills and work experience in an international company with proven record of results delivery.
  • Fast learner and outstanding research and analytical abilities.
  • Mandarin and English – fluent in both oral and written communications.

Desirable Criteria
  • Good experience in assessing technical organization performance, developing technology strategies and implementing processes that improve organizational effectiveness and build a sustainable competitive advantage.
  • Strong strategic thinking and communication skills with the ability to articulate complex information into executive presentations with clear options, risks, opportunities and overall recommendations.
  • Experience in sustainability projects.
  • Good understanding of bp’s and Castrol’s business and operating contexts.
