Job summary

Responsible for providing project engineering expertise for delivering a substantial subset of a moderately complex project and directing contractors and for cross-discipline coordination with other project team members to drive integrated technical integrity of the project and to complete assigned work activities across all phases of the project are delivered in accordance with BP, HSSE, and ethical standards and in compliance with all relevant statutory requirements.

Integrated Gas & Power (IGP) aims to create new markets and premium shorts by participating in downstream gas and power infrastructure and integrating the gas and power value chains. The IGP Engineering Team provides key technical and project execution support to the business. The main objectives are:

  • Build a customer facing business that integrates across the gas value chain and between the gas and power value chains serving both our LNG portfolio and domestic equity gas.
  • Build on the assets in our portfolio and grow our market presence globally.
  • Originate power & infrastructure investments (e.g. gas to power plants, LNG terminals, etc) to capture high demand nodes for power generation and industrial and commercial demand.
  • Develop new solutions to integrate gas and low carbon energy into one offer.
  • Manage non-operated joint ventures (NOJVs) and operating infrastructure investment.
Reporting to the IGP Head of Engineering (located in London), the Lead Project Engineer will provide technical assurance and engineering expertise to the IGP business. The role will support the IGP offices in Canada Square and Sunbury, where the successful candidate will work closely with the origination / commercial development team, providing support and advice on technical feasibility, costs, schedule, project execution plans and operational performance. The successful candidate will carry out technical due diligence for new business opportunities, as well providing technical support to the teams managing existing assets and dealing with technical issues arising out of our contractual rights to use third party facilities.

The successful candidate must be prepared to be flexible and operate independently, but also know when to seek more specialist advice. They will need to be a good communicator, capable of explaining complex subjects to a non-technical audience. In return, there is an opportunity to understand more about the global nature of the LNG, gas and power businesses, and deliver technical innovation in an increasingly important business for bp.

Key Accountabilities:
  • Provide appropriate levels of engineering assurance and project execution advice
  • Identify and manage risks, ensuring compliance with appropriate bp policies and procedures
  • Develop high-level project plans and cost and schedule estimates
  • Manage studies and deliverables from engineering contractors and suppliers
  • Share knowledge of relevant codes, standards, and regulations
  • Advise on technical elements of supply and purchase agreements for gas, LNG and power
  • Investigate and solve design and operational problems
  • Drive HSSE assessments, risk workshops and design reviews

Preferred Experience:
  • Experience of working on LNG, gas and/or power projects
  • Experience of working on projects at the various stages of development, including feasibility and concept selection
  • Detailed understanding of project stage gate processes and the minimum acceptable level of development required to move to the next stage.
  • Understanding of project processes, execution planning and performance management used to review and track project progress
  • Experience with different risk management techniques and practiced in the identification and management of risks
  • Familiarity with relevant industry policies and technical practices
  • Knowledge of process safety tools, including HAZOP, LOPA and QRA.
  • Solution driven mindset
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills
  • Professional Engineer Status is preferred but not essential
