About the Opportunity:

We are seeking an U.S. Media Relations Manager to be based in our Chicago, Illinois or Houston, Texas, office. It’s an exciting time to join bp as we as we fundamentally transform our company. bp’s ambition is to become a net zero company by 2050 or sooner and to help the world get to net zero. This person will be responsible for managing media strategy and outreach on behalf of bp America, including for Houston & Chicago-based businesses, leading industry-specific events and managing media activities, as well as supporting the broader U.S. media affairs team.

Reporting to the Head of Corporate Communications, the role will support communications for the company’s broader business interests and advocacy efforts in America, home to BP’s largest employee base in the world and significant operations spanning the Gulf of Mexico to Washington state. At a time when the global energy system is transitioning to a lower-carbon future, this role is on the front lines of shaping the story of how one of the world’s largest energy companies is reimagining energy for the people and the planet.

S/he will work closely with senior executives and various teams within the U.S. Communications and Advocacy function to highlight BP’s commitment to the U.S. and help advance its broader strategic priority of achieving net zero by 2050 or sooner and helping the world get there too.

The successful candidate will be comfortable in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment, have experience managing multiple projects and assignments at one time, and write for a range of audiences. It’s never been a more interesting or exciting time to enter the energy industry, and this role will be right at the center of it.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Respond to media inquiries from international, national, local, and trade publications and broadcast outlets on a wide range of subjects. Plan and deliver pro-active pitches to local, national and international press outlets.
  • Provide counsel to BP business leadership on external communications strategies and tactics, including messaging, delivery and methods to engage external partners. Prepare communication plans, media statements, briefing papers, in-depth questions, answers and press releases related to activities in the region. Coordinate and handle press events such as press conferences, roundtables, tours, etc.
  • Ensure communications are factual, consistent, effective and aligned with the communications objectives and strategy in collaboration with all channels of bp America and BP Group communications to provide support for special projects and campaigns.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.

Experience and Job Requirements:

  • A minimum of five years of directly related experience with excellent writing skills. Must have experience writing press releases, holding statements, op-eds and comprehensive communications plans.
  • Strong command of AP style and able to convey difficult and technical concepts in a clear jargon-free style. Excellent verbal communication skills, including the ability to present information in a clear and compelling manner. Experience managing multiple stakeholder’s interests and needs, with an ability to influence senior leadership and encourage others.
  • Deep understanding of the 24/7 news cycle, social media channels, media needs and deadlines. Must bring open-mind and contagious passion to achieve team objectives. Thorough and detail oriented.
  • Strong ability to manage multiple programs/projects simultaneously while working under tight time constraints. Comprehensive knowledge of company strategy and assets. Strong sense of humor.

Desirable Criteria and Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated success as a strong teammate who is self-motivated and can work independently as well as collaboratively. Experience writing for various digital and social media platforms and familiarity with digital tools and trends. Deep commitment to personal and professional ethics.
  • High level of energy and passion toward new and evolving challenges. Very strong organizational skills and the ability to adapt quickly to changing circumstances. Ability to network and build relationships across the organization.
  • Overall professional excellence and personal accountability for individual and teamwork product. Proactive and forward-thinking. Experience communicating in a highly regulated industry
