Job summary

We are looking for a highly motivated individual with an analytical background and a passion for meteorology to help solve some of the most difficult challenges facing the wind industry.

Reporting to the Metocean and Wind Resource Engineering Manager, this role is an exciting opportunity for a graduate to mid-level experienced meteorologist to join bp’s expanding global team of Metocean and Wind Resource engineers. This is a new role created to support the integration of increasingly advanced weather research and forecasting systems into a number of key business areas. This includes the use of advanced computational and statistical analysis to drive value from meteorological data and reduce uncertainty in decision making across a wide variety of bp projects. The role includes an R&D element, both in improving the quality of forecast/hindcast models and domain downscaling approaches and developing weather models for inputs to CFD wind flow and wake models.

Core Responsibilities

• Perform analysis and verification of wind resource assessment to support high quality estimates of wind yield for new and ongoing projects. This includes working closely with our world-class wind resource assessors and CFD team on bp-operated projects, as well as supporting our joint venture wind yield assessments.
• Develop and manage a number of R&D projects, nurturing strong relationships with leading Universities and niche consultants.

As a member of the Metocean and Wind Resource team, you will also be exposed to a wide range of engineering challenges, new problems and analysis techniques that will provide great opportunity for growth. The successful candidate is thus expected to be flexible and open to new opportunities outside of their immediate area of expertise. In taking these opportunities, you will be closely supported by our experienced team of Engineers and Analysts who value curiosity and challenge in the pursuit of improved safety and business outcomes.

Essential Experience Job Requirements

• Preferably, 3+ years experience in the wind industry, in either commercial or academic roles - but this is not essential.
• Experience in the application of numerical models including in one (or more) of the following: CFD, Numerical Weather Models.
• Experience in Python and/or Matlab programming.
• Ability to communicate passionately the value of meteorological insights to diverse audiences.
• Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing in a clear and succinct manner.

Desirable criteria

• A PhD and/or post-doctoral qualification in meteorology, atmospheric modelling or climate science.
• Knowledge of boundary layer physics relevant to wind farm applications
• Knowledge and experience of wind resources assessment methodologies is helpful, but not essential.
