Job summary

Technology Development and commercialization (TDC) is the Applied Sciences organisation which focuses on developing the technology needed to improve and decarbonise bp’s hydrocarbon production and refining businesses. In addition to supporting P&O enhance the operation refineries and upstream assets, TDC also holds the expertise to scale proprietary innovations from lab scale to pilot plant scale in order to advance bp’s energy transition.
This activity requires TDC to work in partnership with I&E engineering and with P&O as well as the relevant Applied Sciences teams. TDC also holds the capability for intellectual asset management and licensing in Applied Sciences to ensure bp leverages intellectual property to create value (including value from licensing in partnership with LP&V) and has the freedom to operate where required.
TDC combines chemistry, bioprocessing and engineering capability from refining, upstream and group technology heritage organisations. TDC uses a combination of experimental science and multi-physics modelling to provide the scientific foundation for the future of the P&O business group.
TDC works closely with other teams in Applied Sciences (AS) and acts as the AS integration point for P&O. TDC interfaces with G&LCE and P&C, supporting gas producing regions, hydrogen and e-fuel scale up and subsurface scientific insight for CCUS. TDC also works closely with other teams in I&E, notably Engineering.

The Modelling Engineer is a recent PhD with specialisation in multi-physics modelling, with further experience -in/knowledge-of ai/ml and general data-driven technologies. The engineer will support senior members of the team on providing solutions for difficult problems for the legacy operating businesses and emerging low-carbon initiatives, helping to manage bp’s participation with academic programs in the field, and supporting optionality for ‘leading edge’ methods and processes in the field for problem solving within bp.

Key accountabilities include:

  • Expertise in CFD modeling software; preferably leading-edge open-source.
  • Knowledge of ai/ml techniques and how they can augment science-based modelling.
  • Awareness of key academic and government-sponsored research programs in the field of Multiphysics modelling.
  • External participation with targeted conferences or joint-industrial-partnerships.
  • Creation of tools, methodologies to reduce complexity without sacrificing quality.
  • Support senior team members on request from P&O and other parts of AS.

Demonstrate a solid fundamental understanding of CFD, preferably in multiphase flows, and some experience in applying this understanding to real-world problems. Knowledge of advanced data-analytics methods, and how they can be applied in augmenting CFD techniques.
