Role Synopsis – Process Safety Engineer
The Process Safety Engineer is a technical position for engineers assigned to support the operations (24/7) organization through a wide range of process safety topics and programs, with assignments having an Operating Asset focus.
These roles provide the ability to lead process safety risk management for a wide-range of topics, across multiple process units, while driving programmatic risk reduction for the entire refinery. The roles interact across a multitude of interpersonal levels inside the refinery, including the site Senior Leadership Team, and with BP Domain Experts outside the refinery. To be successful, the Process Safety Engineer needs to have strong technical and operational knowledge base in refining to understand process risk and drive technical and management system solutions.
The Process Safety Engineer is passionate about continuous improvement of process safety risk identification, and process safety programs and work processes for the site in a detailed manner, in line with best practices and compliance standards.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities

  • Understand and engage in a wide array of technical elements using influence across the plant to clearly and robustly identify risk and risk mitigations to handle risk across the refinery, driving consistent and continuous risk reduction for the site.
  • Provides a key partnership role in leading process safety performance across the plant, interacting with managers, superintendents, supervisors, and represented crafts and operators.
  • Supervise key Process Safety metrics and provide leadership and innovative approaches to deliver on Process Safety performance
  • Responsible for compliance with OSHA PSM 29 CFR 1910.119 and EPA RMP 40 CFR 68.
  • Participate and/or facilitate risk reviews including MOC, HAZOP, LOPA, PSSR, for complex plant changes, issues, and start-ups.
  • Maintain Relief and Flare System user documentation. This includes the PSV database and Flare model. Ensure that relief valve and flare information from all pertinent plant changes are included in the documentation.
  • Validate all PSV relief scenarios and sizing calculations for the site.
  • Actively participate in the MOC process to resolve adequacy of existing overpressure systems brought about by process changes as well as timely closure of MOC action items.
  • Provide PSV technical support for Unit PHA revalidation, audits, and operations team support.
  • Analyzing Problems/Troubleshooting & Problem Solving: Systematically resolve root cause(s) of problems through questioning and inspecting, and then identify the best course of action to take
  • Model process releases, fires and explosions to resolve potential consequences and risk rating
Essential Education
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or technical career (Physics, Chemistry).
Essential Experience and Job Requirement
Minimum 3 years of relevant work experience
Desirable Criteria
Experience using release and consequence modeling programs such as PHAST or MAR
