Job summary

Grade is responsible for the definition, approach, facilitation and satisfactory completion of medium-scale projects (typically with direct business impact), using advanced technical capabilities to achieve objectives of projects and/or change initiatives, maintaining project plans, managing project risks, leveraging relationships to achieve stakeholder buy-in and driving continuous improvement efforts. Specialism: Project and Product Delivery.

Role Synopsis

As a Product Manager, you are the expert member of a team creating software for bp colleagues and external users.

Your team’s mission is to be the digital provider of choice to your area of bp - delivering innovation at speed where it's wanted, and day-in-day-out reliability where it's needed. You will operate in a dynamic and commercially focussed environment, with the resources of one of the world's largest Digital organisations and leading Digital and IT vendors working with you. You will be part of growing and strengthening our technical talent base – experts coming together to solve bp and the world’s problems.

Key Accountabilities

  • Collaborates with Portfolio Manager to define the strategy for the sub-portfolio based on market research and goals of the business for value generation!
  • Leads DevOps squads to build and run digital applications
  • Leads resourcing and sub-portfolio budget forecast
  • Looks after the overall achievement planning, execution, delivery and release of sophisticated cross-team engineering initiatives
  • Provide visibility of deliverables to partners and the wider team
  • Highlight delays and blockers to partners as required to assist the delivery function.
  • Guides teams to reflect and identify improvements and successfully embed innovative approaches that move them towards high performance. Identify frequently occurring technical blockers, and work with teams to get them resolved.
  • Supports teams in using relevant agile frameworks, such as Scrum and Kanban
  • Ensure quality and software operability are included into all aspects of the delivery lifecycle (from the very beginning)
  • Brings together different fields from UX, Product, Technical Specialist / SME Engineering to support alignment across the organisation.
  • Identifies where a coaching or mentoring approach is required and apply these techniques to guide teams and individuals to adopting an agile mentality
  • Identifies integration opportunities between capabilities and ensures optimisation of applications for improved design
  • Ensures common performance management tools are used in partnership with other teams
  • Works with Product Owners on planning and maintaining an up-to-date delivery roadmap with a clear focus on business value
  • Supports the management of service outcomes with suppliers who provide developers to augment your team
  • Plans and lead framework upgrades, security patches and other general maintenance for assigned line of products

Essential Education

Bachelors (or higher) degree in Computer Science, MIS/IT, or a hard science.

Job Requirements

Years of experience: 14 to 16 years of relevant experience

Required Criteria
  • Understand and appreciate the importance of discovery and user experience design process
  • Have sound understanding of modern software engineering (DevOps; CICD, automation, QA, tooling)
  • Be confident in leading security incident responses
  • Demonstrate agile ways of working (agile ceremonies, backlog prioritisation)
  • Bring new teamwork techniques to the table
  • Demonstrate a flexible mind set

Essential Skills
  • Communication - Able to relate to and connect with business and technology people
  • Partner management – Able to understand and respond to the drivers and concerns of a wide range of business and technical partners
  • Conflict resolution - can facilitate discussion and the development of alternatives or different approaches
  • Problem solving skills - organizational and analytical skills, and the ability to work round obstacles to get things done
  • Partner/Supplier management – Understanding of key processes and how to get the best from our Partners

Desirable Criteria
  • A validated understanding of Software Development and Software Operations along with the concept of DevOps
  • Validated understanding and experience of current software development processes, including cloud-based delivery
  • A good proven understanding of Agile practices
