Job summary

The Reliability Superintendent leads all aspects of the Reliability engineering team including direction-setting, personnel development, oversight of work quality, establishment of standards, development and implementation of improvements, and measurement of results.

The Reliability Superintendent leads the Reliability strategy based on the BP Global Reliability Improvement Program (G-RIP). The Reliability Superintendent shares the objective of achieving the business goals, including HSSE, Availability and cost management with the Maintenance, Reliability & TAR Manager and other Maintenance Superintendents. This job description is intended to provide an overview of the position and does not include all the tasks that might be required for this position.

Essential Functions and Key Accountabilities:

  • Responsible for the health, safety, and environmental performance of team members to achieve the refinery goals of zero incidents, i.e. no accidents, no harm to people and no harm to the environment.
  • Participates in refinery safety programs, investigates accidents and near-misses, prepares and conducts safety meetings. Promotes a clean, safe work site and assures proper housekeeping.
  • Accountable for the supervision, development, and performance management of the Reliability engineering team including recruiting and succession planning.

  • Accountable to create and sustain an inclusive team culture of engagement and enrollment, ensuring members of the team have input and an opportunity to contribute to the business.

  • Champion of BP’s 20 Element Global Reliability Improvement Program (G-RIP) for Cherry Point.
  • Champions defect elimination, Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Bad Actors, with a focus on Reliability and Maintainability.
  • Uses Reliability Data & Metrics along with Production Loss Accounting to define gaps and aid continuous improvement.
  • Accountable for the establishment and maintenance of asset care programs across the refinery, looking up to two TAR cycles ahead.
  • Jointly accountable for the development and maintenance of Unit Strategies for the Operating Units.
  • Networks both within and beyond Cherry Point Refinery to lead the identification, application and improvement of Reliability processes, systems and technology in alignment with G-RIP and site objectives.
  • Leads the development and execution of the Infrastructure strategy, the multi-year infrastructure programs and Reliability Improvement projects.
  • Champions Continuous Improvement with systematic solutions and work processes.
  • Works with Inspection Superintendent and other Maintenance Superintendents to improve Mechanical Integrity.
  • Provides supervision to Reliability Engineers to ensure proper technical training and development, the implementation and use of appropriate technical standards, codes and practices and the proactive technical input into the planning and execution of Maintenance and Project activities.
  • Develops, mentors, and supervises Reliability Engineers through coaching, training, and other developmental activities.
  • Assures appropriate Control of Work requirements, HSSE reviews, actions and considerations are addressed or completed in the execution of work.
  • Leads the development of annual and future years Maintenance budgets and assures annual budget is analyzed, managed and maintained for areas of responsibility.
  • Leads the development and use of Reliability Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) and supports the use of high-quality Maintenance KPI’s along with other input to drive performance and implementation of improvements as appropriate.
  • Assures support for Turnaround organizations and special projects as required.

Education:

  • Required: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering
  • Preferred: Mechanical discipline

Experience:

  • Required: 7+ years relevant experience in maintenance repairs, engineering, reliability or other plant experience and must have demonstrated strong leadership capabilities.
  • Required: Prior supervisory experience.
  • Preferred: Background in maintenance and/or capital project execution, contractor relations, and some exposure to plant operations are desirable

  • Analyzing Problems/Troubleshooting & Problem Solving: Systematically determine the root cause(s) of problems through questioning and inspecting, and then identify the best course of action to take
  • Key skills include communication, interpersonal relationships, facilitation, influencing, and negotiating. Must be able to develop others and foster diverse relationships throughout the refinery organization
  • Ability to quickly and accurately compare similarities and differences to optimize or detect abnormal conditions within the process
  • The ability to multitask while performing job tasks, without being distracted
  • Assist in HAZOPs, MOC’s, Incident Investigations, and Job Safety Analysis
  • Identify and assess safety hazards
  • Computer Programs—Requires knowledge or strong desire and abilities to learn planning software tools (such as Maximo, Primavera, MS Project, etc.), Excel spreadsheets, Access relational databases, and basic Microsoft Office software.
Additional Requirements:
