bp is undergoing a strategic transition into an integrated energy company and has an ambition to be a net zero company by 2050 or sooner. Applied Sciences is the team that conducts bp’s physical research and development (R&D); bp is a technology-based company and this global team of about 750 specialist scientists, technologists and engineers will be key to making net zero a reality through the development and scaling of low carbon technologies and solutions as well as maintaining a healthy pipeline of advanced differentiated products for Castrol and bp’s fuels businesses.

The Applied Sciences’ Strategy, Capability & Partnerships (SCP) team generates coherency across Applied Sciences’ activities and ensures effective integration and alignment across the global teams and with internal bp stakeholders. It is the team that maintains Applied Sciences’ strategic frame that is used for R&D portfolio balancing and for managing the prioritised allocation of bp’s R&D investment – for example, balancing near-term and longer-term development opportunities. The team also plays a lead role in the Applied Sciences Transformation agenda and in continuous improvement projects to enhance the effectiveness of R&D investment.

We have a vacancy for a Strategy & Integration Manager, working as a member of the central Strategy, Capability & Partnerships Team.

Job Purpose:

The Strategy & Integration Manager will be a key member of the Strategy & Performance team within the Applied Sciences Strategy, Capability & Partnerships team. This team maintains the Applied Sciences strategic frame and drives portfolio optimisation across bp’s R&D activities as well as managing the planning and performance management processes for Applied Sciences in partnership with bp’s Finance teams.

The Strategy & Integration Manager is a broad role. It will contribute to, and drive elements of, the Applied Sciences transformation agenda and will also contribute directly to the maintenance of the strategic frame for bp’s R&D activities. The post holder will be expected to actively contribute to the continuous improvement of planning and performance management processes to drive effectiveness and efficiencies across Applied Sciences. The Strategy & Integration Manager will have a have a particular focus on developing participation strategies for the main components of bp’s new and emerging value chains such as bioenergy, hydrogen and CCUS in partnership with leads for these areas (participation strategies will help us determine what R&D activities should be conducted in-house, and which through partnerships with third parties).

The Strategy & Integration Manager will play a lead role in ensuring effective integration across applied sciences and with bp teams. This work will include the articulation of how Applied Sciences creates value for bp’s business with the post holder being accountable for delivering best-in-class communications content to showcase prioritised activities and delivery milestones. They will work with other members of the Applied Sciences teams and with internal communications experts to use selected channels to enhance Applied Sciences integration and alignment with bp’s stakeholders.

Key Accountabilities

  • Actively contribute to elements of the Applied Sciences’ strategic frame, including the articulation of clear participation strategies in emerging areas
  • Work directly with other bp enablers such as Regions, Cities and Solutions and Launchpad and Ventures to develop strong structural links into our strategy development process.
  • Work with the Applied Sciences Leadership Team to ensure that strong connectivity and coherency exists across the R&D portfolio
  • Identify and recommend new ways of working to improve integration across Applied Sciences and with key stakeholders
  • Lead the development of the applied sciences continuous improvement roadmap, focussing on transformation opportunities
  • Lead or actively supports high priority transformation projects and build strong networks to ensure transformation synergies are realised across Applied Sciences
  • Accountable for communications activities to enhance the Applied Sciences brand and awareness of how we create value, e.g. the “BiteScies” publication
  • Help develop and maintain effective planning and performance management processes to drive efficiencies across Applied Sciences

Essential Criteria & Qualifications
  • A technical background in either a science of engineering discipline; breadth will be an advantage

  • Exposure to, and a natural interest in technology, development
  • Strong written communication skills
  • Good strategic thought processes with a demonstrable ability to drive value creation
  • Experience of working on change projects
  • Agile practitioner skills are desirable

  • Ability to take a strategic view and link to tactical activities
  • Experience in relationship management and demonstrable ability to manage multiple stakeholders at all levels
  • Candidate will have a value-oriented mindset built on technical foundations
  • Able and confident to offer challenge and advice, and the tact to land this constructively
  • A proven record of being able to work successfully in a multi-discipline team environment
  • Uses impact and influencing skills effectively to gain support for ideas from others
  • Proven interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interpret and convey complex topics to diverse audiences
  • Suitable candidates will be self-starters with the ability to work in an agile and independent manner whilst also being a strong team player
