Job summary

Grade F - We are looking for a senior lawyer to join bp’s competition & regulatory compliance team, advising bp’s global businesses on regulatory compliance and financial crime (especially anti-bribery and corruption, anti-money laundering, and sanctions) matters.

About the role
The CRC team is responsible for providing specialist legal advice to the entire bp group on regulatory compliance / financial crime matters and competition matters. This role is for a specialist to play a leadership role in the team alongside similarly expert colleagues, advising at senior levels on, and play an integral and strategic part in bp’s management of, financial crime matters – including successfully defending and protecting bp’s interests, if necessary, in multitrack proceedings involving multiple regulators or jurisdictions.

Key Accountabilities

  • Providing high quality and commercially sound legal advice on regulatory compliance and financial crime (especially anti-bribery and corruption, anti-money laundering and sanctions) matters to the bp group. These matters include the full range of contentious, advisory and transactional legal matters in these areas - including government investigations, internal investigations, M&A transactions, and business-as-usual compliance activities.
  • Providing advice on strategy and direction on bp’s most serious and complex contentious regulatory compliance and financial crime matters to senior stakeholders within bp.
  • Directly and independently handling a broad portfolio of clients’ matters, which will include advising senior stakeholders in diverse bp businesses.
  • Supporting and advancing the development of more junior team members within the team.

Essential Experience
  • Significant experience in expertly advising on one or more of the core regulatory legal areas: anti- bribery and corruption, anti-money-laundering, or international trade regulation (sanctions and export controls).
  • A track record of successfully defending multinational corporations from government requests and investigations, including multitrack proceedings involving multiple regulators or jurisdictions.
  • A successful candidate with have experience handling contentious matters (including acting as defence, prosecutor, or in a judicial capacity). Such experience would ideally include a firm understanding of criminal law procedure and evidence, courtcraft, advocacy, legal privilege, settlement processes and the practicalities of conducting criminal litigation.
  • A successful candidate will be a highly capable communicator who has a track record of effectively addressing difficult topics with senior leadership and advising on complex, risk-based decisions which will set strategic direction for complex matters.
  • This is a senior level leader role within bp. The successful candidate will be capable of consistently modelling our beliefs and code of conduct – through driving and encouraging speak up, collaboration and compliance – and showing leadership in the team through supporting and coaching other lawyers.
Desirable Criteria
  • Experience conducting complex internal investigations including advising on risk-based decisions around privilege, data privacy and other complex investigations.
  • Broader experience across the range of technical areas that the team provides legal advice on.
  • Proven ability to lead teams and projects, particularly in situations where formal authority is not present, by developing strong inter-personal relationships.
  • Experience in competition or anti-trust matters, or a desire to gain experience in areas outside of their proven expertise.
Essential Education
Necessary qualifications required to practice law in the United Kingdom or United States.
