Job summary

  • A full-time senior privacy lawyer is required to join the Digital & Privacy team (D&P), that sits within the Digital, Applied Scliences, Privacy & Brands legal team, to assist bp in delivering its strategy while maintaining a strong culture of data privacy compliance within the organisation.

D&P serves as bp’s central data privacy team responsible for maintaining bp’s global privacy compliance framework.
In doing so, D&P provides the business with the necessary tools, training, processes and advice for managing personal information in accordance with bp requirements and applicable laws.

The successful candidate will be a key senior contributor to bp’s privacy programme helping our business achieve its aims while mitigating its privacy related risks.

About the job:

  • Maintaining, shaping and implementing bp’s global privacy programme, including drafting, implementing and advising on applicable policies and procedures and training and awareness materials.
  • Preparing for and responding to cyber security incidents and other issues involving personal data.
  • Analysing relevant and evolving legislation across geographies to understand the impact on bp and assisting in their implementation where applicable.
  • Supporting a network of local privacy managers across the company.
  • Assessing the privacy implications of new technologies, data strategies and business opportunities developed by bp’s global businesses.
  • Supporting the data privacy aspects of contracts and counterparty due diligence such as supply chain arrangements, joint ventures, acquisitions and divestitures in collaboration with others in legal and other support functions.
  • Instructing and managing external counsel as necessary and within budget.

About you:

  • In-depth understanding of privacy legislation, including the GDPR and UK Data Protection Act 2018.
  • Experience in developing, implementing and/or maintaining a privacy compliance programme.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work well both independently and as part of a team. This role requires engagement with all levels of the businesses and support functions across bp.
  • A proven track record of high-quality contribution to strategy and delivery.
  • English law qualification preferred.
  • International experience.
  • Strong technology and project management skills.
  • Prior experience with the legal aspects of technology or cybersecurity related matters.
