We are looking for a Senior Design Engineer to join our fast-growing HXD team to support them in building outstanding user experiences. We’re seeking a results-oriented individual who can help shape our design teams, and processes, ensuring that designers have the right tools and technology at their fingertips to build awesome experiences.

As a Design Engineer, you will identify potential tools, systems, and platforms for design teams to use at bp to operationalize and bring efficiency to design activities. You will act as a specialist on digital delivery mediums and upskill others on best practices for that medium, whilst guiding teams and mentor colleagues on how to facilitate good, clean design. This role will ensure the appropriate UX and visual design process and outcomes are integrated throughout the development and lifecycle of the product/service. Additionally, this person will anticipate and engage with the design trends, emerging tools, and technology to communicate their value to the wider team and use them to inform designs.

As a design engineer, you’re accountable for

• Scale design systems and pattern libraries.
• Contribute design patterns that can be applied across products
• Continually assess the products and tools being designed, identifying ways we can improve them
• Identify workflow techniques that drive efficiencies, reduce repetitive actions, and encourage cost saving.
• Help build and enable the governance and contribution model of a design
• Stay up to date with accessibility compliance and requirements and drive implementation within designs
• Understand the array of technical constraints, user goals and business requirements that shape a product
• Recognize the cultural aspects of UI design (e.g., how color is perceived in various parts of the world), and apply this to visual design strategies for products/services

About you
You will have a degree in Human Computer Interaction, Product Design, or Computer Science or equivalent experience. Experience is what matters most. The successful candidate should have experience working in a Design Engineer or Design Technologist capacity with an in-house design team or design agency. Experience of supporting a design team in a development capacity is also vital to the role.

It’s also important that you have:

• Knowledge of Agile or Lean UX or product methodologies and experience working in a collaborative, agile environment is a plus
• Experience working in a complex business environment supporting projects working at pace
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
