Digital Science and Engineering applies the leading edge digital innovation capabilities to bp’s challenge of providing energy to the world while transitioning to a zero carbon future. Digital Science uses the business adoption of new digital technologies as it’s measure of performance. Although relatively small in size, Digital Science is world class in reach, processes, activities, and results. It works with the very highest levels of external organizations and operates within the full context of external digital and business innovation as well as bp strategy.

The Senior Digital Science Associate is responsible for the identification and application of range of emerging digital technologies for bp. The expectations for the impact on BP in terms of economic value are very high due to the increasing importance assigned to digital technologies at the bp leadership team level. Virtually all of bp’s front-line activities are being digitized and digital technologies have been identified as a major source of bp’s productivity and potential for top line improvement.

This position is part of a team which combines innovation, business development and relationship management. It is significantly different from traditional digital leadership roles with large portfolios; this role will lead several initiatives working with highly technical people engaged in leading edge, innovative activities that are inherently unstructured.

Digital Science (DSci) comprises engineers, technologists, scientists, and entrepreneurs who lead a portfolio of initiatives working with highly technical people engaged in leading edge, innovative activities that are complex with many moving parts. A high degree of stature, leadership, influence and soft skills are required to achieve successful business adoption of disruptive technologies.
DSci works with the very highest levels of external organizations and operates within the full context of external digital and business innovation. Consequently, the DSci team constantly challenge themselves to be open to new ideas and bring them to fruition in bp.

Honest discussion to understand business context, direction, and challenges as one-team is required to recognize the importance of digital technologies enabling core energy industry technologies. To do this team members build networks inside and outside of BP, building strong relationships based on respect and trust.

All DSci team members show fluidity, speed and initiative in unstructured contexts. In senior roles business development skill are required to create longer-term vision from an unstructured context and apply prudent risk-taking.

Responsibilities

  • Scans the digital technology horizon to identify emerging digital trends, new products and solutions potentially relevant to bp; assesses potential vendors, consultants, and market segments.
  • Is an expert in one or more technology disciplines and acts a knowledge transfer agent to the wider community in bp.
  • Develops and nurtures collaborative external relationships at the CEO or executive level with major vendors, venture capital firms, governments, academic institutions and research firms for long-term collaboration.
  • Leads delivery of projects to prove viability or potential value of a technology to bp
  • Works closely with key stakeholders to identify challenges that can be addressed through new digital technology and seeks to solve problems with the help of Digital Science’s ecosystem.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math, or equivalent professional experience
  • Motivated by the challenges of solving complex problems and a passion for making things happen.
  • Ability to rapidly grasp new concepts.
  • Capability to provide technical clarity and business direction to business stakeholders
