Job summary

The Incubation team is a new team within Launchpad and Venturing set up to build a new capability fundamental to the reinvention of bp and delivery of its purpose in reimagining energy. Incubation will hold specialist capabilities, centralised within bp, to test and grow new business ideas, based on new technology or ground-breaking business models! In success cases, it will rapidly turn these ideas into innovative businesses for bp. In failure cases, it will ‘sunset’ these ideas with appropriate learning – and in a lean, agile fashion. This will not only minimise wasted expenditure but also maximise the number of ideas that can be validated.

Key accountabilities for the Incubation team include:

  • Originate, nurture, grow, and launch autonomous start-up teams. 90% of start-up teams are expected to be sunset efficiently.
  • Efficiently disprove business case hypothesis at scale to advise future investments.
  • Launch autonomous start-ups with enough recurring revenue to make metric driven decisions.
  • Upskill residents of incubation so that they bring the skills needed to accelerate execution, decision making, and innovation back into bp and the entities bp has invested in.

Synopsis:

The Principle Venture Builder (Incubation) is responsible for leading and auditing the team's prioritisation of work as well as their velocity and therefor makes critical decisions about when to sunset teams out of the incubation program. They will steer start-ups and founders in the core strategy of their company. You are expected to shift start-ups and teach the founders how to adjust their core strategies.

The right candidate will have had experience of being a Product Manager and have worked on multiple technical projects and or worked within multiple blue-chip companies. The role would suit someone who has been a software manager before who is looking for an opportunity to drive and steer the star-ups through a series of build-measure-learn experiments.

The successful candidate will be responsible for building business case hypothesis for each start-up, and teaching founders how to develop and refine the hypothesis so that they can use the tool on their own.

The Principle Venture Builder first demonstrates then teaches founders how to disprove core business case hypothesis using a variety of tools including inexpensive ones like TAM and competitive analysis as well as expensive tools such as launching a go to market strategy or developing an MVP!

This role is very technical. The role necessitates expertise and experience with a wide variety of business models and industries so that the you are able to advise and steer the full range of start-ups and pivots.

This individual is steering CEOs, often to change the fundamental goals of the company or to steer investment into or out of the company

Key capabilities:

  • Hypothesis refining, Upskilling residents, launching autonomous teams with product market fit.
  • Be data-driven, iterative, and committed in the pursuit of a better product development.
  • Product Manager background crucial, with experience of working across multiple industries, business building capabilities. Entrepreneurial background or experience working in small start-ups. Experience as Product manager in a B2C or B2B start-up or organisation.
  • This individual is steering CEOs, often to change the fundamental goals of the company or to steer investment into or out of the company. For this reason the role should be held by a seasoned and experienced professional capable of leading difficult situations and trusted to make the right calls for bp.
