Job summary

Grade GResponsible for delivering business analysis and consulting activities for the defined specialism using advanced technical capabilities, building and maintaining effective working relationships with a range of stakeholders, ensuring relevant standards are defined and maintained, and managing process and system improvements to deliver business value. Specialisms: Business Analysis; Data Management and Data Science; Digital Innovation.

Synopsis of accountabilities:

Data scientists typically build scalable, re-usable data science products, usually containing statistical or machine learning algorithms, in collaboration with data engineers and software engineers. As part of their work, data scientists will also carry out analyses to yield actionable business insights and to inform their statistical or machine learning approaches (if needed).

Compared to data analysts, data scientists have more stringent requirements around coding capabilities and require Machine Learning skills.

Compared to performance analysts, data scientists have much stronger coding and statistics capabilities.

The competency dimensions of a data scientist are shown below with expectations explicitly called out for illustrative purposes:

  • Statistics and Machine Learning: You deeply understand several and have applied a wide range of statistical or machine learning methods to build data science algorithms (e.g. for forecasts, ranking, pricing, natural language, computer vision, …) or carry out advanced data analytics (e.g. product A/B testing, causal inference from observational data)

  • Data Manipulation: you understand the end-to-end lifecycle of the data and the data systems deployed in your immediate team; you can make simple changes to the data tech stack in your immediate scope; you can write and maintain advanced data pipelines (if needed); you have expert SQL skills; you can handle all types of data (e.g. streaming, structured, unstructured data)

  • Coding: You contribute to internal and/or external libraries through raising issues, adding documentation and/or contributing new features; you write clean, re-usable code in a language that runs in production at bp.
