Job summary

Central Subsea (CS) is responsible for the specification, design, delivery, installation, commissioning, and any needed refurbishment of Subsea Production Systems (SPS). This includes components from the wellhead through to the flow-line and riser, as well as miscellaneous topsides elements. For hardware delivery, CS acts as bp’s single face to the SPS suppliers for equipment design, procurement, storage, maintenance, and onshore repair. The Subsea Hardware Engineer will work in a supplier facing squad delivering trees and wellheads scope. This includes managing the technical assurance of the equipment, as well as SPS supplier performance to deliver the equipment in-line with project cost, schedule, quality and HSSE requirements.

Key Accountabilities
  • Ensure safety is the number one priority in all activities – from initial specification and design to final testing and delivery – and demonstrate leadership behaviors that support bp’s commitment to safety, including safety walks during site visits and audits as appropriate.
  • Build and foster healthy relationships externally with SPS suppliers and internally with Projects, Wells, Operations, Global Concept Development (GCD), and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs).
  • Understand current and future equipment demand forecasts and their timing, and utilize relevant inventory stock before placing new Purchase Orders (POs). When placing new POs, utilize standard designs from CS’ equipment catalog but also use sound engineering judgement when considering legacy designs. Help generate a Decision Support Paper (DSP) and obtain approval when standard catalog equipment is not used.
  • Ensure SPS supplier’s equipment design meets specifications by attending SPS supplier design reviews, and if required, perform Technology Readiness Level (TRL) / Technology Risk Categorization (TRC) assessments and any subsequent Technology Readiness Assessment Plans (TRAPs) and/or (Failure Modes Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECAs). Record all reports / calculations / findings in Engineering Verification Plans (EVPs) and review the output with the team’s Engineering Lead and the Regional/Projects Engineering Manager.
  • Actively manage and close out documentation reviews in eBentley, as well as technical queries, interface requests, Conformance Deviation Requests (CDRs) / Non-compliance Requests (NCRs), risks, and any deviations from specifications / Engineering Technical Practices (ETPs) / industry standards in Project Management Control System (PMCS).
  • Execute deliveries per cost and schedule agreements with Projects / Wells. Generate Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and provide technical reviews of Variation Order Requests (VORs) / Variation Orders (VOs) when needed.
  • Support Projects / Wells with various reviews, design assurance activities and risk assessments per agreed Major Projects common process (MPcp) requirements.
  • Performance manage SPS suppliers and rigorously manage deliveries to a mindset of no-change, while not compromising on safety or quality. If changes are required, generate a Management of Change (MOC) in the appropriate reporting tool (PMCS, eMOC) and obtain approval(s) before proceeding.
  • Report delivery progress to squads in ADO as well as issues to CS in Salesforce. Provide periodic progress reporting to Projects / Wells as appropriate and attend periodic Projects / Wells meetings.
  • During the delivery process, look for opportunities to implement Continuous Improvement (CI) initiatives and support Quality and the SPS supplier with Root Cause Analysis (RCAs) in ESQ2. Document Lessons Learned in Salesforce and share the lessons with other squads / teams / Communities of Practice (CoPs) during various periodic meetings.
Essential Education:
A minimum degree of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering

Essential Experience and Job Requirements:
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in the oil and gas industry of which 2 years should be in subsea systems
  • Familiarity with industry specifications of API 17D, API 6A, and IOGP S-561
  • Technical knowledge of subsea trees and wellheads, as well as equipment that interfaces with it
  • Strong interpersonal skills with experience in influencing project teams, suppliers, and contractors
  • Strong teamwork skills with experience in working with engineers and multi-discipline teams
Desirable criteria
  • Professional accreditation (P.E. or Chartership)
  • Subsea tree and/or wellhead experience with a SPS supplier
  • Familiarity with Agile methods and tools
