We have a vacancy for a Technologist, technology deployment – market support, working as a member of the Technology Deployment Team.

The Applied Sciences team comprise a range of research, laboratory, and technology deployment teams around the globe. Our Chicago, IL location is the hub for our US Advanced Fuels Products technology deployment activity which is co-located with several of our fuels business activities including the Mobility & Convenience, Fuel Supply and Midstream, Trading & Shipping, and other related teams.

Job Purpose

The Regulatory & Risk Technologist role is responsible for providing regulatory implementation guidance, compliance incident management, and technical advocacy support on U.S. federal and state ground fuel regulations to bp’s U.S. Customers & Products, Trading & Shipping, and Production & Operations organizations. This activity supports our current fuels product portfolio as well as increasing activities related to new energy vectors including bio/renewable fuel products, hydrogen, and EV charging. This activity is integrated into the technology deployment team which provides overall technical competence, product quality and regulatory support to our business partners, customers, and consumers.

Key Accountabilities

  • Develop thorough knowledge across U.S. ground fuel regulations including U.S. EPA fuel quality requirements, Renewable Fuel Standard, state fuel quality requirements, and specific state programs, e.g., California Low Carbon Fuel Standard.
  • Provide regulatory implementation guidance to bp U.S. Customers & Products, Trading & Shipping, and Production & Operations organizations, helping to turn regulatory requirements into compliance and practical workstreams / activities within the businesses.
  • Monitor federal / state legislative activities on fuel regulations and advise bp businesses on impact of proposed and forthcoming regulatory changes.
  • Work collaboratively with bp legal and external counsel in managing compliance incidents, including incident resolution, root cause analyses, and corrective actions.
  • Incorporate agile ways-of-working and expand use of digital tools in fuels regulatory compliance systems.
  • Conduct activities in a safe and responsible manner and ensure compliance and integrity of local data
  • Prioritize workload to improve value for the business

Essential Criteria & Qualifications

  • Degree in engineering or chemistry is preferred. Degree in a related technical field may be acceptable
  • Relevant experience in a technical or regulatory role
  • Working knowledge of fuel products and fuel distribution supply chain
  • Familiarity with U.S. ground fuels regulations is desirable
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills and experience of working across teams
  • Demonstrated collaborative approach to working with SMEs
  • Strong project management experience
