About the role

The Utilities Procurement Advisor (UPA) reports to the Utilities Procurement Senior Manager and plays a critical role in realizing Procurement's objective - to become a world-class procurement organization with leading capability in category management that deliver relevant, value-adding category strategies to BP's businesses. This role is responsible for the end-to-end category performance within the defined scope which operates in accordance with corporate policies and processes, defined governance, and delegations of authority.

The primary focus of the UPA role is to create transformative category strategies based on supply market expertise, current and future business needs and global category spend and innovation opportunities that identify impactful business value (with a focus on savings through effective category deployment). The successful candidate will develop effective implementation plans, working in partnership with Business Interface peers (Site Procurement Manager / Hub Manager) and GBS to support successful implementation to agreed timelines. You will deliver value to the business through taking the lead in the category and ensuring compliance to the agreed strategy and sourcing expectations, and will be accountable for all sourcing, negotiation and contracting activity which includes expiring contracts and releases from agreements. All work activity performed at a category level has the necessary urgency to support safe, compliant, reliable, and efficient business operations. In this role you will work closely with the relevant business interface staff in Procurement (hub or site) to ensure business stakeholders recognize a single, coordinated team, communicating on an aligned basis.

About the team

The Utilities Procurement team are experts in electricity, natural gas, and industrial gases procurement, supporting all bp assets from Refining, Terminal and Upstream assets to Global Retail businesses, and the fast-growing EV business across the globe. We work closely with the new and growing parts of the business in Low carbon Energy and Hydrogen development as well as multiple stakeholders across all businesses.

    Key Accountabilities

    • Working with the business interface resources in the Procurement organization to ensure consistency and alignment of messages
    • Manage business stakeholders to secure buy-in for category strategy, own relationships with key regional and/or global suppliers
    • Ensure effective communication between the category management and business interface organizations
    • Mitigate supply risk (e.g., technology developments, acquisition impacts)
    • Lead multi-site utilities procurement projects and supports key site projects where appropriate
    • Support the development, proposal, implementation, and ongoing performance review of purchasing and risk management strategies for the group's gas and power needs
    • Review, monitor and comment market reports
    • Research and prepare briefing papers
    • Provide support to North American assets to understand and optimize the local, regional, and global business requirements for third-party goods and services
    • Identify, implement, and realize value through effective “strategic cost management”, using best-in-class methods
    Essential Experience & Job Requirements
    • Demonstrated experience at delivering business benefits to an organization through effective category management, category strategy development and category strategy delivery
    • Significant Utilities industry experience in natural gas and/or electricity markets or industrial gases H2 market from customer or supplier side
    • Global Category Management / Utilities Sourcing experience
    • Excellent communicator skilled at fostering and cultivating relationships
    • Demonstrated experience collaborating with stakeholders, suppliers and internal/external partners across multiple sites or locations to drive common solutions.
    • Excellent analytical, negotiations and problem-solving skills. Passionate for results, strategy, and hands on execution.
    Desirable criteria & qualifications
    • Technical experience and competency in the Utilities category
    • Proven success in organizational and project management
    • Demonstrated ability in financial and market analysis
