Trading & Shipping is bp's face to the commodities markets including oil, gas, power, emissions, and finance. Our role is to enhance performance and maximise value for bp’s assets through distinctive supply, commodity trading, data analytics and risk management; underpinned by a world-class finance, control and compliance infrastructure.

About the programme

Designed for penultimate year students, our 12-week Summer Internship Programme commences in May 2023/June 2023 and is designed to give you maximum exposure to our Trading & Shipping business. You will be working on projects with real impact to our business. You’ll be placed in a team that best matches your skillset and ambitions and be an integral part of the team’s success.
  • You could be carrying out research and analysis into a particular market area to help support trading decisions
  • You could be producing a daily news report to highlight market information and important drivers for the trading team.
  • You could be supporting teams on key projects related to our low carbon ambitions
  • You could be working to automate and optimise systems to speed up trading processes

Alongside this, a buddy will help you network and learn everything you need to perform in the organisation. Over the course of the internship programme, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about our graduate programme through networking, training & information sessions before deciding on which graduate development track you would like to be considered for as our summer internship is a primary pipeline for our 2024 Trading and Shipping graduate programme.

About you
You are passionate about reimagining energy for people and our planet, are committed and adaptable and want to make a difference. Even though good levels of numeracy are important, you won’t necessarily need a formal technical background. You’ll bring well-rounded life experience, and your strong academic results will be supported by some work experience, everything from customer service to industry experience is great!

You’ll have strong organisational skills and the ability to deliver results in a collaborative environment. Your agility to learn and adapt will be key along with the energy, motivation, and ownership to make the most of this fantastic opportunity. You’ll be comfortable making courageous and bold decisions, have digital fluency, a keen eye for analytics and the insights they provide.

As a bp intern, you will have an interest and/or skill in delivering economic value back to a business, identifying solutions and strategies resulting in cost savings and a natural negotiation style. To be eligible for the T&S Internship-Programme program you will:
• be currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in any discipline which could range from Business, Commerce, Finance, Accounting, Economics, Arts to STEM
• be in your penultimate year of study, graduating between August 2023 and July 2024

Its role is to enhance performance and maximise group value for our assets through distinctive supply, commodity trading, risk management and information technology, underpinned by a world-class finance, control and compliance infrastructure.

Trading & shipping – Internship Programme
Our 12 week paid internship programme is designed to give you maximum exposure to our Trading & shipping business. You will be working on projects with real impacts to our bottom line. You’ll be placed in a team that best matches your skillset and ambitions, and be an integral part of the team’s success.
Examples of previous projects include:

  • Carrying out research and analysis into a particular market area
  • Producing a daily news report to highlight market information and important drivers for the team.
Throughout, you will have on the job training as well as face to face and online learning to develop technical and soft skills. Alongside this, a graduate buddy will help you network and learn everything you need to perform in your role. As a penultimate year student, our interns will be considered as potential candidates for our 2023 trading & shipping graduate programme. We have designed the program to enable flexibility, giving you the choice of a development track preference when joining.


Trading & shipping development tracks include:
Trading
Joining our energy trading team, you’ll be part of managing our trades on all of the major energy commodity exchanges and the OTC market as well as our daily exposure to global currency and interest rate fluctuations. You’ll have the opportunity to experience different trading disciplines and styles from physical trading to paper trading

Analytics
Analysts have the opportunity to directly influence the bottom line as part of a highly commercial and skilled team. Working in the fast-paced world of our trading floors and with access to vast amounts of data and information, you’ll focus on driving continued growth in trading profits and acting as a subject matter expert on energy market fundamentals. This organization includes specialists working in market analytics, structuring and data science.



Commercial
Every year, bp invests billions of dollars searching for new sources of energy, supplying our customers with the fuels they need.
You’ll help to ensure we make the best use of our investment. We want you to be in the best position to propose new and creative ways to maximize value. There are many commercial teams responsible for building and maintaining key relationships, developing unique solutions to address bp’s and our customer’s business needs and creating additional value for our trading business. Our rotations include marketing & origination, structured products, trading operations, chartering and strategy.




During the internship programme, you will be assessed for your suitability for the Trading & shipping graduate development programme.

Requirements
To apply for this role, you will need to be in your penultimate year of study, or in your final year but continuing your education with a master’s degree in the next academic year.
