What is carbon offsetting?
Adam Hart-Davis explains carbon offsetting
An independent panel made up of representatives from three international NGOs – Fauna & Flora International, The Climate Group and Forum for the Future – selects the projects that carry out the activities generating the offsets. BP Target Neutral has applied the UN SDGs as part of the project selection process, so that projects are not only chosen based on emissions reduction potential, but also on their broader impact to society and the environment.
Projects must disclose their impact on a range of SDGs, such as good health and wellbeing, affordable and clean energy, decent work and economic growth. BP Target Neutral uses this information to rank the projects based on their contribution to the SDGs relative to the CO2e reduced. This provides the detail required for a shortlist, which the panel can then approve for site visits and final selection.
