In 2016, BP Acetyls Americas celebrated the 30-year anniversary of a production agreement with the Texas City acetic acid site that has been in place since 1986. Our story begins with the original owner and developer of a leading acetic acid technology, Monsanto, and later a group of employees and other investors formed Sterling Chemicals to purchase the asset while BP purchased the technology. Using the expertise and skills developed within BP for sales and marketing, supply chain and logistics, a deal was put together with Sterling Chemicals that provided BP with the exclusive rights to 100% of the acetic acid produced from the Texas City unit. In 2011, Sterling Chemicals was purchased by Eastman Chemical Company, who currently operates the Texas City facility. The unique commercial relationship continues to build upon the strengths that BP Acetyls has in technology, sales and marketing, including a portfolio of valued customers.
BP has an ownership share in the Atlas Methanol Company with joint venture partner Methanex. The unit is located in the Point Lisas Industrial Estate in Trinidad & Tobago and produces 5000 mt per day. Built in 2004, the unit is a world-class unit that takes advantage of the abundance of local natural gas resources. BP markets methanol via its trading arm, BP Integrated Supply & Trading.
