Environmental monitoring

We collect baseline data and monitor specific deep-water environments so we can better manage the potential impacts from our operations and exploration
This helps us plan drilling activities, lay pipelines and build offshore platforms, as well as respond to oil spills.

We began observing environmental conditions when we started seismic and drilling activities at our Greater Plutonio project in 2002. Since then, we have carried out extensive environmental monitoring around our offshore blocks and collected hundreds of sediment and water samples across various location in the Angola Continental margin. This unique comprehensive sample collection, BP survey samples into Natural History collections for further study and we discovered 45 new deep-sea benthic amphipods (subfamily: Harpiniinae) from Western Africa.
