Our unleaded 91 with up to 10% renewable ethanol is our first renewable fuel blend available in Australia.
Unleaded 91 with up to 10% renewable ethanol combines regular BP unleaded 91 with up to 10 per cent ethanol as well as special cleansing and anticorrosion agents to match the performance and engine protection of regular unleaded. Unlike regular unleaded ethanol absorbs carbon dioxide, partially offsetting greenhouse gas emissions. In most instances the greenhouse gas saving is small compared to petrol – typically between 1 and 5 per cent.
Ethanol is an alcohol made from fermented sugar cane and grains, and their by-products. It is sourced from different Australian suppliers and trucked to our terminals where it is stored in dedicated tanks. We then blend our regular unleaded petrol with up to 10 per cent ethanol as we load it into tanker trucks. An anti-corrosion agent and cleansing detergents are also added to create a fuel that can be used in post-1986 vehicles that are well maintained and designed to use regular unleaded petrol. This renewable fuel blend is then trucked to BP service stations where it's sold as unleaded 91 with up to 10 per cent renewable ethanol, usually replacing our regular unleaded.
