2007 Oil and Gas Graduate Scholarship Programme Announced

4 October. 2007

BP on behalf of its co-venturers in major oil and gas contracts in Azerbaijan announced today in Baku the 2007 Azerbaijan Oil and Gas Graduate Scholarship Programme. This programme will provide scholarships for up to five qualified Azerbaijani citizens for Master Studies in Geology, Geophysics, Petroleum and Reservoir Engineering in USA and Turkey for the 2008-2009 academic year.

The programme has been operated by BP on behalf of its co-venturers since 2001 and as part of it 32 Azerbaijanis have been sent to oil and gas graduate studies at reputable international universities to date.

The selection process for the graduate scholarship programme is made in several stages and includes the review of applications to determine the eligibility of candidates, a preliminary English language test, and short-listing of finalists. The finalists then take TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and GRE (Graduate Record Examination) followed by individual interviews with BP representatives.

“This annual graduate scholarship programme intends to promote economic and social development in Azerbaijan by enabling bright young Azerbaijanis to undertake graduate studies in the USA and Turkey. This provides an excellent opportunity for them to contribute to the prosperity and sustainable development of their country on their return to Azerbaijan,” says Greg Mattson, HSE and Technical Vice President.

Notes to Editors:

The driving force behind this initiative and similar projects is BP and its co-venturers’ commitment to the sustainable economic development of Azerbaijan. BP and its co-venturers are also working to develop a number of other initiatives to encourage the non-oil sector and support enterprise development throughout Azerbaijan to assist the country in diversifying its economy through their Regional Development Initiative, Community Investment Programmes and educational sponsorships.
