Households in the Sichuan biodigester project can now cook using renewable biogas
A key element in relieving extreme poverty is through support for rural development and employment.2
By buying carbon offsets, bp Target Neutral is supporting finance for the Sichuan Household Biogas Programme in China – in a region where typical disposable income per person is little more than one euro per day.3
To date, the project has generated more than 10,000 jobs, substantially improved the lives of around 1.2 million people in rural areas and reduced carbon emissions by more than 800,000 tCO2e per year.
It has helped equip nearly 400,000 low income households with biodigesters and efficient cook stoves to replace solid fuels such as wood and coal with biogas that is fed into appliances such as cookstoves, rice cookers, water heaters and lighting.
The biodigesters turn animal dung into biogas thereby replacing the use of non-sustainable solid fuels such as coal or non-sustainable wood.
Employment has been created in construction and maintenance of the digesters. Around 2,000 mainly farmers and bricklayers have qualified as certified biogas technicians.
In addition to the subsidies that help fund the purchase of the biodigesters, the project has a clear revenue sharing plan4, distributing proceeds from carbon offsetting to participating households, the local rural energy office that provides biodigester servicing, and to the project developers.
With sustainable and affordable biogas, households also enjoy considerable energy cost savings by not having to purchase coal for their cooking needs.
And by replacing solid fuels with biogas, the project reduces indoor air pollution and the risk of associated respiratory diseases.
