Close to four million people around the world die prematurely every year as a result of illnesses attributable to household air pollution from cooking with solid fuels such as firewood, animal dung and coal1


By buying carbon offsets, bp Target Neutral is supporting finance in projects that not only reduce carbon but make a critical difference to the health of low-income families.


In Mexico, firewood is the main energy source for approximately 80% of rural households, and the majority of households still use open fires which are energy inefficient in terms of fuel usage.

These fires can also cause respiratory problems and burns, and because they are inefficient, the high demand for fuel to supply them contributes to deforestation as well as consuming an estimated 15 to 20 per cent of household income.

The ONIL cookstove project has equipped 31,781 rural homes in Mexico with cookstoves that burn much more efficiently and use up to 58% less firewood than a traditional open fire.

That means a reduction in carbon of almost 92,000 tCO2e per year.


And because the ONIL cookstove uses chimney flues to exhaust cooking gases outside of the building, indoor air pollution is reduced to near WHO standards.
