Composting facility, Australia



Project Summary

The disposal of organic waste into uncontrolled landfills emits significant amounts of methane to the atmosphere. Natural Recovery Systems has developed a process for diverting organic waste into sealed vessels to enclose and compost the waste preventing emissions from being released to the atmosphere.


The project also reduces the community’s demand for local landfill capacity, collects and recycles contaminated water that could harm local groundwater, reduces odour and reduces the attraction of rats, mice, birds, flies.


Project Description

The project began operations in September 2001 and mitigates greenhouse gas emissions by diverting organic waste from landfill to sealed vessels which prevent methane from being vented to the atmosphere.


The emission reductions are verified by GHD Pty Ltd under the Australian Greenhouse Office (AGO) ‘Greenhouse Friendly’ Scheme, certified by Australian Federal Government Department of Environment and Heritage. The accreditation ensures that the project meets both regulatory and financial additionality criteria. The AGO ‘Factors and Methods Workbook’ is the basis for calculations and accounting is done in accordance with the Australian Greenhouse Office’s Greenhouse Friendly Project Requirements. These are based on the ERUPT program, which is compatible with WRI/WBCC methods, and has an equivalent level of rigour.


Contribution to Sustainable Development

In addition to emission reductions, the project provides other sustainability benefits:

  • Diverts material from local landfill, reducing the environmental impacts of land filling which include methane emissions, surface water, groundwater and residential amenity impacts.
  • Recovers valuable nutrients which aid plant growth when applied to soils.
  • Compost enhances soil structure.
  • Contains good moisture conservation properties.
  • Reduces the development of soil borne diseases.
  • Reduces our dependence on pesticide and synthetic fertiliser usage.
  • Reduces a community’s demand for landfill capacity.
